WASHINGTON, D.C. (Nov. 20, 2025) – The No. 7-seed West Virginia University women’s soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with No. 2-seed Georgetown in double overtime in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. After a penalty shootout to decide the advancing team, the Hoyas advanced to Third Round by a 4-3 count at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C., on Thursday night.
Both teams found the back of the net in the first half, but after two overtime periods, the score remained knotted at 1-1 and went to the penalty shootout. The PK score was tied 2-2 after the first two rounds, before both teams missed their tries in the third. Tied at 3-3 going into the fifth round, WVU missed its kick and the Hoyas converted to take the shootout win and advance in the tournament.
In the first half, West Virginia had the early breakthrough from senior forward Ajanae Respass in the third minute. After several chances and a battle for the ball in the box, Georgetown’s errant clearance was recovered by senior forward Taylor White just outside the 6-yard box. White crossed the ball to an open Respass, who tapped an easy ball in for the early go-ahead score.
West Virginia would hold the lead for 20 minutes before Georgetown found the equalizer in the 23rd minute. The game then became a defensive battle, with both teams working diligently to keep the other off the board. Following regulation and overtime, neither squad could find the breakthrough and the game went to a penalty shootout, resulting in the Hoyas advancing to the Third Round.
The final box score showed an extremely even match, with WVU just edging Georgetown 14-13 in shots and 8-7 in shots on goal. West Virginia also claimed a slight 51% edge in possession. Despite allowing a goal in the match, the Mountaineer defense was excellent, getting on top of numerous Hoya chances in the box. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Bailey Herfurth also made six saves in the draw.
With the tie, West Virginia moves to 24-20-7 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. Additionally, the Mountaineers are 3-5 in penalty shootouts in tournament play. WVU’s lead in the all-time series with Georgetown now moves to 16-7-4.

West Virginia’s unbeaten Big 12 campaign was part of a 15-match unbeaten streak that stretched from Aug. 28-Oct. 30 and included 12 wins and three ties.
