So with us tying England the other day, basically if we win our other 2 games we make the knockouts.

My question is, what if England does the same? I know that it goes to goals scored after that, but what if we both beat the other teams 1-0? We'd have an equal record, equal goals scored, and equal goals allowed. And head to head we tied. Who wins the pool? Or is there technically no winner?

1. Goal differential.
2. Goals scored.
3. Head-to-head.
4. Random draw.

We really need to win this group if at all possible. The #2 team plays Germany in the 1st knockout round. And I don't think we want any part of that.

Oh wait, that's the M-State fan in me talking.

But really. Ghana did look good against Serbia. Either of them could beat Germany. Germany's definitely the favorites but they could easily come out of that group in 2nd.

I think Rooney & Co. are going to take out their frustrations on Algeria.

You are right though. Coming out of our Group 1st means playing Serbia, Ghana or Australia vs. playing Germany. That would be huge. Not only that, it would line us up for a Quarterfinal matchup with France, one of the most beatable superpowers in the tournament. Go the other way and we would face Germany then if we somehow won, Argentina most likely. Gross.

Say that you have in a division:

Team A: Beats B & D, loses to C
Team B: Beats C & D, loses to A
Team C: Beats A, Loses to B, Ties D
Team D: Loses to A & B, Ties to C

Teams A & B would advance, but you would have to tie-break. Suppose the goal totals were identical for both, you would then consider the match between the two, in which case Team A would win the tiebreaker.

Of course, this rule is interpreted differently if C were to beat D. In that case you throw out the games with D and run the tiebreaker on the new numbers.

have something to play for against England. Huge advantage for us. No matter what happens in our Slovenia game, Slovenia will have a chance to advance when they play England.

The second set of tiebreakers is only among teams involved in the tie (i.e. head-to-head).

and they will have thrown in the towel by the time we play them. I think our only realistic chance to win the group is if Slovenia somehow ties England and we win both games outright. I doubt we could beat England on goal differential.
