My business partner, Kevin, was on the 1985 and 1986 (after transferring from playing two years at South Carolina) Miami teams, playing for Jimmy Johnson. He remains connected with the program as a booster. He was even the culprit in causing a near bench clearing brawl in the 85 Sugar Bowl after delivering a late hit out of bounds on the opposing sidelines.

On our last trip to Miami, he took me right in to the athletic facilities and straight to Randy Shannon's office for a quick reunion and talk about the upcoming season.

First, Randy Shannon was a very nice guy and I left impressed by his professionalism and his passion to be then coaching his Alma mater.

Kevin and I were talking about the bowl announcements with clients over dinner this evening and the subject came up about the coaching search. According to my business partner, Dan remains at or near the top of their list, he would not say much more even as I dug for more information but he would give me little except to say that I should not be too comfortable but that Miami is REALLY interested in getting a chance to sit down with Mullen. I was only listening as the conversation was initiated by my client but I was quick to pry for more information but none was given. I WILL be digging for more first thing tomorrow morning.

doesn't mean ****. What matters is if Mullen is interested, and based on his actions and comments over the last 2 days, I am not worried.

Then why are we still waiting forthe announcement on Mullen's raise and contract extension? If Mullen wasn't at least a little interested in the Miami job, that would have been announced by now.

both Mullen and Stricklin want to wait till after the bowl game? If I am Mullen, I say, "Let me win this bowl game then you can give me a nice raise".

Pure business, and any head coach in his position would be stupid not to do the same thing.

I guess. I don't know.

If it were me, I would announce the raise in Jan. because that is prime recruiting season.

I really doubt we're waiting until Mullen gets another offer before we pay him what he's worth. Until Mullen's extension or Miami's new coach is announced, I'm going to stay at least a little worried.

to sit down with Mullen either tonight or in the morning. Mullen is considering it...... I know Stricklin said we would never lose a coach due to money, but I am not sure we can match the number that got Mullen to agree to the interview (over $3M).

I don't want any part of it to be true!

But I do know one thing, I have never been interested in too many jobs until an offer has been presented... perhaps Dan is not "interested" either but all it takes is a conversation and a real offer to change that.

In my hear of hearts I would like nothing more but to see a new contract offer from State: signed, sealed, and delivered... but even that would not prevent Miami from buying him out of the contract and signing him to a new one. It is the nature of what is now NCAA sports as well as professional sports coaching.

Nice to see that our HC is on the short list of a semi-prestigious program (more championships and more sustained success would change that to a simple prestigious) program.

Hopefully, the statements Mullen has said to date are from the heart and what he intends on doing. I for one would be as excited as most anyone on this board for it to be true.

I think one truth is that if Mullen does sign an extension, this will be a recurring conversation piece each and every year at this time, that is unless by some miracle the state laws are changed to allow longer term contracts... but that would only make it more expensive for some university to go after Mullen and buy out his contract. Mullen could also have some out clause that we are all unaware of until it happens that would make it possible for him to pursue another job with a little more ease and less financial impact on that new suitor.

They are not willing to pay a figure that high in the first year, unless of course there was a national championship won and a huge bonus awarded for winning it. The budget is in the neighborhood of 2.35 million per year (they still have to pay our Randy Shannon's remaining contract and are looking to raise more money to improve facilities and other athletic programs, not just football.

why would Miami offer $3+ million to Mullen who has two years under his belt as a HC with a 13-11 record? They were paying Shannon $1.5 million who was 28-22 in four seasons (i.e. a slightly better winning % than Mullen currently).

but I'm just saying that it's good to know what kind of a framework we're working with here. We could pay Dan 2.8 million and then Miami comes back and says "That's all they can pay you, shoot, we'll give you 3 million."

Sure we could match it, but there may be some advantage to letting someone else have the first shot.

but he has 2 NC's as an OC, and has State from obscurity into a New Years Day bowl...many football people out there know Mullen is probably the top young college coach right now

Greg Byrne was shocked that no one had ever interviewed Dan Mullen for a D-I head coaching job now.

And to add to your comment- look at what has happened to Florida on offense since he left.

New contract. I've heard a salary of between $2.1-2.5mm with nice incentives that could get him to $3mm. I have also heard that he could be getting a $3mm salary/year, both contracts are 4 year deals. Just thought some of you need Xanex to calm you down. I think he really is staying, because it's not as sexy as it used to be and it's obvious that the U is desparate as hell.

The money is there to match or pay whatever is needed. Strickland is right that we will not lose Mullen because of money.

Mullen will make his decision based on if he wants to stay there awhile and if he thinks he can win a championship there. 2.5 million vs 2.7 million at each school wont matter when the decision is made.

Mullen is trying to decide if he can win a NC at Miami and would he and his family enjoy it there the next 5-8 years- thats what this is about

Mullen is using this Miami situation as leverage against MSU. It makes no sense whatsoever for MSU to wait one more day to announce a new contract for Dan. The uncertainty is already being used against Mize State in recruiting battles. Dan isn't waiting to win the Gator Bowl as one poster suggested to finalize his raise. Does that mean he will take a smaller raise if State loses the bowl game? No way. We should have already finalized a doubling of his salary. The way our athletic director is handling this defies reason. Unless...Dan won't sign a new contract yet. That my friends must be the issue. So, until Miami signs a new coach not named Dan Mullen, there is reason for concern among the Bulldog faithful.

And don't forget, he already has a contract! We're talking about an extension...what's the rush? Unless you think he's a liar, in which case he can go as far as I'm concerned.

I do believe that C D M will stay. I do agree with many that it would be nice to see him back up his words with a signature on a contract. That will at least make it a little more costly for someone else to take him away.

I also see it as a smart move to at least sit down and listen to Miami. It's good business for C D M to at least entertain offers. It's also free publicity and a way to keep Mississippi State in the news. A simple leak to the news after the interview that says something like, "I'm staying with the school that's still on the rise" would resonate through the media and really give us a boost.

Further, I do not believe that @#*'s salary is even an issue. I believe that C D M is trying to take care of his staff and get some facility upgrades into the contract. I think that finding the funds to cover those points is what is taking a little time in finalizing the contract. I also feel that MSU is waiting for the "Right Time" to announce.

I believe that once the contract is signed, we will not only be happy that C D M is staying but I think we might be happy with some of the other points in the contract.

“The only administrator I’ve talked to at any university about coaching football is Scott Stricklin. Right now we’re working on what weHOPE can be a deal that will suit everybody and get our program going in the right direction — the direction it’s going right now for us — in the long term. There are a lot of great things I think we can get done here at Mississippi State that I want to accomplish here at Mississippi State. IPLAN on being the head coach here for a long time.”

Maybe I am gun shy about coach speak, but to me there is nothing concrete about the words hope and plan. I think Mullen wants to stay here for a while and build on what he has going, but he isn't stupid. If I had to guess, he has some kind of idea what a Miami is willing to pay and we better be close.

Meeting with Miami gives him a legitimate estimation of his real market value. Stricklin says he's willing to pay but how do they know how much if they don't know what he's worth in the marketplace? If Miami says 2.1 million, then they have a starting point. If they say 3.1 million plus significant raises for your staff, that is something Stricklin will have to look at.

That is a fact. Mullen is Miamis top target. Whether he takes it or not we shall see. The things that work against State have already been discussed at length. The real issue here is if Mullen thinks he has reached his potential in Starkville. Does he think he can win the SEC west in the next 2-3 years?? The SEC is not the ACC. Very tough to win 9 games in the SEC period. Miami is a huge job. I dont think this is really about money as I really believe Dan likes Starkville and the role of the underdog. We will see but from what I am hearing theywill offer him the job if he shows interest. He would be crazy not to listen and at least use leverage to sweeten his deal. After this season he is seen as a hot commodity and has a chance to bail and be the head coach of a huge program.Remember Schiano at Rutgers? He could have picked his school after the 2007 season. This year with Schiano as the head coach they went 1and 6 in the Big East.
