Most of the NY Bourbons. I think NYers try to compete because interestingly enough, upstate NY is VERY similar to Kentucky in terms of culture and landscape, even down to limestone water and the rolling hills.

But they all fall short. I've yet to have a NY Bourbon that tasted like a Kentucky Bourbon. Not sure why..

Just my amateur opinion, but seems to me that bourbon is a lot like wine, taste and quality is strongly correlated with price. I like red wine, but the cheap stuff tastes like crap.

Bought some sanitizer from Yankee Distillery (near Saratoga Springs) last year and ended up buying a small bottle of their bourbon and I've yet to try it, bourbon's one of those I've never really developed a taste for even though I'm a born and raised Kentuckian. Now Vodka or Tequila I'll drink plenty of.

I bought a bottle of Paul Jones, on sale, out of a basket cart in a Hilton Head Island liquor store in the mid 90’s. Horrific.

You go across the street to Shmaltz/Single Cut brewing? Some decent beer works over there.

While the whiskey in the northeast is bleh.. the beer, as you probably know, is off the charts.

Lmfao no it isnt. My ex is from Rochester spent plenty of time up there. The culture is sure as hell nothing close to Kentucky.

Rochester isn't "upstate" as for as NYers go. Its western NY.

Upstate is going north from NYC about 2 to 4 hours drive distance.. and its far more similar than you think. Again, rolling hills, limestone, smaller towns, big into horse racing with Saratoga Race track.

Idk, I found it pretty similar. Atleast when you compare other states.

Burnt ******* Bourbon is definitely at the top of list. Sweaty Taint Bourbon is a close second.
Depends on whose taint and how aged it is, just ask Gassy.

Have not had bourbon in a while now. Been a Rum and Scotch man for quite some time.

Worst Bourbons:

willet pot still
1792 full proof (blue streak pick)
Balcones baby blue
Dickel (all of their lines are terrible... don’t lecture me that Tennessee whisky ain’t no bourbon)

USNY bourbons that ARE good:
Widow Jane 10 (I think it’s MGP) is pretty damn good
HillRock Solera is a Dave Pickerell production and is an interesting terroir release.

commentary:

Upstate NY, with the exception of Saratoga, is a collection of dying little cities whose heyday was in the late 1800’s. Sad isolated towns, rusted away with failed manufacturing factories long gone that have a weird abandoned hippie/crime riddled underbelly.

You’ll see these stately beautiful Victorian mansions and housing stock erasure in great disrepair. Think Old Louisville, but the whole town being that.

that said, NY state has unmatched natural beauty in terms of landscape, topography and natural variations ... by only California.

I had Widow Jane when it first came out and it was horrible.

Dickel is definitely not bourbon either.
The WJ ten isn’t bad.
Tennessee whiskey is bourbon technically by definition, but bourbon isn’t Tennessee whisky buhGawd.

I don't know if it's a bourbon, whiskey, or whatever, but Southern Comfort was at the top of the list for me.

Ah yeah, Hillrock.. that's pretty good, forgot about that. I can't really disagree too much with your assessment of Upstate NY, especially thinking of Schenectady NY where GE once resided. I do think we're in a better spot than Western NY, though.. Utica, Binghampton, Rochester, Syracuse, etc..

Saratoga is a real treat, like you said. I urge anyone who hasn't been to make a trip there.

It does have Clarkson College - one fine engineering school.
