The WJ ten isn’t bad.
Tennessee whiskey is bourbon technically by definition, but bourbon isn’t Tennessee whisky buhGawd.
Technically, Tennessee whiskey is aged in used barrels and then charcoal filtered. Two things that prevent it from being bourbon according to the official definition adopted by congress.

It's considered bourbon by the IRS for tax purposes, but the IRS can GGP.

Have yet to make it down to WP, wanted to go this fall for the OU game but of course C19 had other plans. Our time here is limited given the grandbaby's arrival last spring, so need to check off a bunch of bucket list items before moving back to Texas.

Used barrels = automatically disqualified the term Bourbon. Most whiskeys (in America) aged in used oak barrels is then called American Whiskey (like Michters American #1)

Charcoal Filtering... I believe EW BiB is charcoal filtered.

Jack Daniels uses new oak barrels that THEY Cooper. charcoal filter.

Tennessee whisky uses the charcoal filtering (like Brita) and takes all the oils/flavors out.

any distilled mashbill over 50% corn that touches (for a microsecond) in new white oak barrels is bourbon. Then, if you finish it in anything other than new barrels technically needs a description as a suffix to the term Bourbon.

BTW: eff Tennessee and their ****** whiskey (except Chattanooga).

Brough Brothers. Tasted like jet fuel. Left behind almost a full bottle at a cabin in Gatlinburg.

Rochester isn't "upstate" as for as NYers go. Its western NY.

Upstate is going north from NYC about 2 to 4 hours drive distance.. and its far more similar than you think. Again, rolling hills, limestone, smaller towns, big into horse racing with Saratoga Race track.

Idk, I found it pretty similar. Atleast when you compare other states.
Beautiful state around Saratoga and the Adirondacks.

Catskills/Hudson Valley's a nice area. I like Buffalo, I like the grittiness to it, Western NY south of Buffalo is nice. Didn't realize that St. Bonaventure was out that way, Ithaca's a neat area small college town with Cornell. The only Ivy league schools we haven't visited is Princeton and Columbia.

Back in the day Tom Moore made Old Crow top shelf. Bootleggers made a fortune off that rock gut.

Worst Bourbons:

willet pot still
1792 full proof (blue streak pick)
Balcones baby blue
Dickel (all of their lines are terrible... don’t lecture me that Tennessee whisky ain’t no bourbon)

USNY bourbons that ARE good:
Widow Jane 10 (I think it’s MGP) is pretty damn good
HillRock Solera is a Dave Pickerell production and is an interesting terroir release.

commentary:

Upstate NY, with the exception of Saratoga, is a collection of dying little cities whose heyday was in the late 1800’s. Sad isolated towns, rusted away with failed manufacturing factories long gone that have a weird abandoned hippie/crime riddled underbelly.

You’ll see these stately beautiful Victorian mansions and housing stock erasure in great disrepair. Think Old Louisville, but the whole town being that.

that said, NY state has unmatched natural beauty in terms of landscape, topography and natural variations ... by only California.
Have you been to Old Louisville lately? There are fewer and fewer of those run down Victorians, most of them have been fixed up really well. Still a few ****** multi families though, and of course you still have a bunch of panhandler weirdos. But most of the houses themselves have been fixed up really well. I have been looking for a house recently and you really can’t find much in Old Louisville under $400-500k.

Also, Willett Pot Still isn’t my favorite, but there is NO WAY it is the worst or even among the worst bourbons.

Most of the NY Bourbons. I think NYers try to compete because interestingly enough, upstate NY is VERY similar to Kentucky in terms of culture and landscape, even down to limestone water and the rolling hills.

But they all fall short. I've yet to have a NY Bourbon that tasted like a Kentucky Bourbon. Not sure why..
Cause there ain’t no such thing as NY bourbon. NY whiskey on the other hand... 😉

Calumet. think its made in Bowling Green. Rot Gut.
Have had some that.. didn’t think it was so bad... but whatever the bootlegger sold was bad bourbon... I saw Tom Moore come up and do remember Distillers Pride being terrible...

Wonder if it's the harsher & longer winters? Would that affect the bourbon that much?

I think it's a relatively new thing. I remember Albany Distilling Company made a few bourbons about 8 years ago, but they were hardly aged. I think a lot of companies are still getting their product up to speed. Hudson Baby Bourbon was kind of the same, as I recall.

Looking at the website, ADC's Borubons are only aged "minimum 24 months". And as I recall, they were pretty harsh.

My friend had a 4 story victorian house right near 4th and Hill St.......I done a lot of work on the old place.....he had to nearly give it away.......parking is the issue where he lived......he had one space behind his house and that was it.....some days I would spend most of my time moving my work van to keep people happy......his neighbors knew my van..........beautiful house though......back in the day I turned quite a few of those houses in that area into apartments......ruins them IMHO...........at least on the inside.......

Where does it say Tennessee Whiskey is put in used oak barrels?

Nowhere because it isn’t true.

the only thing Tennessee whiskey does to bourbon is place it the through the Lincoln county filtration process.
It's gotta be in that barrel for a minimum of two years, and the charcoal filtering changes the flavor and color. Both disqualify jack and dickel.

They classify it as Tennessee whiskey. They CAN call that ******** bourbon. They choose not to.
They'd have to change their process of making it to call it bourbon.

You've become a damned yankee, trying to convince people that JD is a bourbon. You'll get your mouth smacked if you try to do that down here in person.
