I heard an ad for their football season tickets and didn't realize their recent success..

11 straight winning seasons. 4 of which were 10+ wins. 10 bowl games in last 11 years. 5-5 in those bowl games, 3-4 in bowls v current P4s. Overall in all games, 3-5 v SEC in the last 11 years.

I know State would never leave the sec for the aac. But damn, I'd enjoy that aac schedule and enjoy every win.

The Memphis fanbase would tell you otherwise.

My wife's a Memphis grad, and trust me when I say that no one gives a flying 17 about steamrolling Georgia St, ECU, Florida Atlantic, and Rice. Yeah, they had some fun talking about their chances of making the CFP, and there is something to that, but even they repeatedly admitted that they were going to get skulldrug if they made it.

Unlike Penny's basketball team, Memphis football is in a tough spot. If they want to have any chance of having a 10 win season and making the CFP, they can't schedule any more than one P4 program worth a damn. At the same time, though, the AAC is some downright awful football, and no one wants to watch that. Even their fans

I wonder how many Memphis fans would say they would rather be in the SEC, if given the chance.

I can see this very much being a greener grass across the fence sort of situation. Their win total is appealing to those who dont have it and our money plus recognition and higher level schedule is appealing to those who dont have it.

Why? What's stupid is watching us go 2-10. I realize that's the bottom, but we're 19-38 SEC since Mullen left, and the coach before him was 10-30. Other than the Mullen years and the one Leach year, it hasn't been much fun.
Leach was 4-4 in the sec in both full seasons he coached, 21 and 22. Merlin’s only eclipsed 4-4 once in 9 years.

All of them. Their latest is begging to get into the PAC. However they're also arrogant enough to believe they'll win at the same clip they currently are in a P4.

My question is more from our perspective. Worded better..... how many more seasons of the toughest schedule in college football resulting in a losing season does State fans endure before the SEC money isn't worth it?

sec paid out $52.5 per school
Memphis received $11 from the aac
Acc $45
Big 12 varies per school but a total of $470 divided
Pac $36 but I believe that starts to decrease

If State could jump to the ACC, State should do that. The football schedule would be more manageable. the difference in Basketball and baseball quality in the acc v sec is negligible.

However I'm of the opinion that the gap between us and upper echelon of the sec will continue to grow in football. I'm sure others disagree on that.

But getting to 6-6 (2-6) this year may improve my opinion on this. We shall see.

If we went to another conference, I would hope it would be the Big12. That conference can be won by any team. Take back a pick six and a fumble returned for a TD even as bad as State was they beat their champion.

The difference last year of SEC vs ACC was drastic. The SEC was MUCH better. The difference between the ACC and the SEC historically is drastic with the ACC being MUCH better.

Only thing I don't like about moving to ACC is the travel. I think the ideal situation for State would be for the top 20-30 schools to break away into a super league, and then the remaining SEC schools (likely State, UMiss, Ark, Mizzou, Vandy, UK & South Carolina), realign with what's left of the ACC (Miami, FSU, Clemson & UNC will likely be gone) and the Big 12 to form a 3 division 2nd tier league with divisions split roughly geographically. We'd have solid but manageable schedules. Our revenues would definitely take a hit, but not as much as dropping to AAC would, and would be pretty comparable to the rest of the schools in our league.

It's ensuring our survival.

Well, we've intentionally tried hard to tank our program. If we just make semi-rational decisions, we aren't going 2-10.

Only the dumbest of the dumb would advocate leaving the SEC. Being in the SEC is like being a junior member of the toughest gang. You get no accolades and get picked on, but you share in the spoils and are protected.

Being in the SEC, we’ll be part of the next iteration of big time CFB (likely 60ish teams), if not in the SEC we wouldn’t be part of that it.

What's the advantage of tanking in college sports? Other than I guess saving a bit of $.

Many more 2-10 (0-8) seasons and you won't have to worry about it. The SEC will ask us to leave. Picked 16 again this season with and over/under of 1 SEC wins! How long y'all willing to "enjoy" being the SEC whipping boy? Keenum killed our football program trying to be a cheap imitation of Lonnie Tinkleton!

IF State finished last in the SEC again this season or even only wins 2 SEC games and goes 4-8 you have to make a change. And you HAVE to pay, Pay, PAY!

Memphis would trade all of that right now to change places with Vanderbilt.

I have little confidence we're going to do that.
I meant, had we made semi-rational decisions. Put yeah past tense present tense, we've never really made good decisions year in and year out. Or even, 'non-bad' or 'non-idiotic' decisions.

What's the advantage of tanking in college sports? Other than I guess saving a bit of $.
Guess I needed sarcasterisks. I meant we're a bunch of dumbassses making dumbasss decisions that are so egregious that only a dumbasss could not see it coming.

And like SMU buy their way in with millions, as much as they could raise

The football season I think for us is hoping for that 1-2 upsets and then having some money in Vegas at 4 wins and loving that if/when it happens.

Would last years team been any better in the AAC?
Our last years team lost to Toledo. Toledo only went 8-5 in their MAC conference with losses to W. KY, Buffalo, Bowling Green, Miami of OH, and last but certainly not least they lost to Joe Moorhead's 4-8 Akron team. There's few conferences anywhere our team would have been better in

Other than getting big bucks thrown at a hapless athletic department and hopeless situation, along with more exposure at our ineptitude (during the most inconvenient timeslots for home football games), what does being the SEC really get us?

For basketball and baseball being in a conference like the AAC would still get us in the tournament and our regular season records would be even better.

And we'd all save a shi tton of NIL dollars.

Seems to me some of you are assuming we'd attract the same caliber of athletes we typically have, thus putting us in position to win in a lesser league. That is a pipe-dream.

We have gotten our best players as very talented guys who wanted to play in the SEC, but couldn't start over 5-star and most 4 stars at the upper-tiers. Our recruiting this year looks pretty underwhelming, but imagine what it would become as the norm if we left the SEC for the AAC!
