Seems to me some of you are assuming we'd attract the same caliber of athletes we typically have, thus putting us in position to win in a lesser league. That is a pipe-dream.

We have gotten our best players as very talented guys who wanted to play in the SEC, but couldn't start over 5-star and most 4 stars at the upper-tiers. Our recruiting this year looks pretty underwhelming, but imagine what it would become as the norm if we left the SEC for the AAC!
We literally couldn't recruit much worse than we do now. We wouldn't dominate in a 2nd tier league by any means. But we'd damn sure be very competitive.

But you're looking at our recruiting from a small window. With NIL & portal BS, this may well become the norm, but it certainly hasn't been the norm historically.

If we left the SEC for the AAC, we're pretty much guaranteeing a huge drop in recruiting that would become permanent. We're not going to find success in another conference if our recruiting is no better than average and quite possibly below-average within the AAC.

We'd likely find ourselves in relatively the same situation competitively, but with $ millions less coming in from football.

NIL & the portal has ruined college sports and has become the terrible thing for us I predicted it would when it was still being debated before becoming a reality.

We would end up at the bottom of the AAC within 5-7 years, maybe sooner.

Correct, on both.

@patdog - we'd drop like a rock. Would literally trend towards USM, not to mention Ole Miss would probably greatly benefit.

Wrong and Wrong. We would be a lot more like an NC State than a USM. And Mississippi is doing just fine with us in the SEC, they won't do any better if we weren't in the SEC.

I'm going to put this in tennis terms for you. You'd rather be a great 2.5 player than an average 4.5 player. That's the analogy you are making to me.
Well, I wouldn't know much about either one. But in tennis, I generally prefer to play a little bit up than play down. But there sure are a lot of people who love to manipulate the rankings so they can play down and go to state and sectional tournaments regularly.

I'm saying I would rather be the average 4.0 player (SEC) than the good 2.5 player (AAC). You are the opposite.

The hard truth is that the Mississippi schools are very lucky to have been original members of the SEC. Neither of them would be on the invite list if it were being reworked today. I also think it's not guaranteed that the current SEC makeup is static over the next 5-7 years with the shifting landscape.

UM is doing everything it can to justify its continued membership in the SEC; they're laser focused on it as an existential strategy. Plenty of people hate Lane, and he is a ridiculous person, but he is mastering the PR aspect of SEC relevance, which is having people talk about that program. And the administration (athletic and academic) is clearly behind this strategy for the existence of the school.

If State is actually "pivoting" to baseball more exclusively, this is probably the strongest way to strengthen its brand to stay SEC relevant. I realize that's not a perfect comparison since baseball isn't a revenue generator necessarily, but I would liken it to being a basketball school 25 years ago.

ETA- they're not on the invite list because of the relatively tiny media footprint that the schools have. Just not enough alumni or eyeballs for media.

I heard an ad for their football season tickets and didn't realize their recent success..

11 straight winning seasons. 4 of which were 10+ wins. 10 bowl games in last 11 years. 5-5 in those bowl games, 3-4 in bowls v current P4s. Overall in all games, 3-5 v SEC in the last 11 years.

I know State would never leave the sec for the aac. But damn, I'd enjoy that aac schedule and enjoy every win.
We already are recruiting like it. We'd be a perfect fit

Many more 2-10 (0-8) seasons and you won't have to worry about it. The SEC will ask us to leave. Picked 16 again this season with and over/under of 1 SEC wins! How long y'all willing to "enjoy" being the SEC whipping boy? Keenum killed our football program trying to be a cheap imitation of Lonnie Tinkleton!

IF State finished last in the SEC again this season or even only wins 2 SEC games and goes 4-8 you have to make a change. And you HAVE to pay, Pay, PAY!
They never asked Candy to leave. We are charter members so it ain't happening!

Back when Fed-Ex owner Smith had a son, Cannon, playing qb/db for Memphis around 2012, he offered a a bunch of money a year for 10 years to any of the big conferences to take Memphis. My old feeble mind remembers it as $100 million a year, but it was probably only $10 Million a year.

Is that a true equivalent rating for State and Memphis? We are richer but not necessarily a better football program in 2025. Historically I'd say we are a 4.0 and they're a 3.0. But we play in a 5.0 -7.0 league. That's the point.

However they are 1-1 vs State in the past 11 years. 2-2 vs OM in that time frame. They play Arkansas at home this year.

There can be SEC-A and a SEC-B football divisions. Still play the same tough schedules. Get the same annual payout. However, the SEC-B division teams can play for their own Championship....and the SEC-A can play for the top D-1 playoffs. Details could be worked out, but it's possible. And if all the conferences divided up the same way, there could be a D1-B National Playoff and a D1-A National Playoff. Of course, MSU would be in Division B. This would be for football only.

Memphis would trade places instantly. I don’t think some of you realize how much they have scratched and clawed to try and get in a power conference and have been left at the alter. They were so excited to join the Big East and then it all blew up and eventually turned into the AAC.

With that being said some of yall have lost your damn minds about leaving for the AAC.
