Heck gonna have some weapons to work with, I like it and a talented and deep TE room as well + the screen game.
And Indiana is undefeated and on its way to a national title with EIGHT four- or five-star players while most other CFP teams had between 40 and 55. And at least some of Iowa's portal pickups have had offers from little schools like Alabama, Kentucky, and Michigan State, to name just a few. It doesn't matter where kids come from. It matters what skills they bring. And, BTW, I hear Iowa had a QB last season from some FCS school . . .
Let's see if you're right, but last time I checked football is played the same way at all levels. If you're talented, you're talented. How many times do we have to point out that Indiana's unprecedented success was built with players and a head coach from James Madison!The jump in competition is going to be too much for the overwhelming majority of these guys.

Exactly. James and Diaz will burn teams for stacking the box by taking the top off the defense. You saw what the burners from Vandy did. Iowa now has a stable of big, sure-handed receivers like Vander Zee and Hudson and has added speed and quickness with Diaz and James. Mix in three or four big, powerful TEs, a bevy of multistyled RBs and, well, Hecklinski and Lester are gonna have weapons like Iowa has seldom had. The Hawkeye offense should be putting up Indiana-type numbers next year which, of course, takes a lot of pressure off the defense and allows them to play even more aggressively.
Punter? Who needs a punter? Whoever he is, he's gonna be one of the loneliest guys in football.

I think that today this is Iowa’s only viable strategy for significant upgrades to the wide receiver corps. I still have significant concerns over who is implementing that strategy and who will be coaching them and throwing to them.
Iowa can and should play moneyball. We aren't a perennial top 20 HS recruiting team so why would it change for the portal? The better part about this is we are taking under recruited and lower level school kids who are actually producing all ready with multiple years of eligibility and some have had good offers since. Now we can build off that with more development.
Also who cares what fookin school they go to? We would have been so much better off as a program since Nate Stanley if we had NDSU and SDSU's quarterbacks.
Would you rather have those who were not good enough at their respective high level schools?
We all hope Iowa's portal approach of completely avoiding P4 players in favor of productive smaller school/division players pays off big time.
The flaw in your logic, however, is the assumption that all of these guys will stay at Iowa and blossom throughout their full remaining years of eligibility. Unfortunately, history--recent though it may be--teaches us that many of them will transfer again, either because things didn't pan out at Iowa, or because things panned out too well at Iowa and someone with deeper pockets and/or a more reliable path to the playoffs comes callin'.
This is why some guardrails need to be put in place on this absurd 100% player-centric wild west transfer environment. It doesn't necessarily need to go back to the days where once you signed an LOI you're stuck. But this current trajectory is utterly and completely unsustainable. There has to be a middle ground where both sides have some protections.
Interesting note on Bradshaw is that he grew up rooting for Hawkeyes and wanted to be a Hawkeye.
The average age of this Indiana team is 23 years old. They showed a graphic during the Oregon game where it said that and that the Chicago Bears average age is 25. Those extra years in the weight room make a big difference it appears.

While this is true, I’d be willing to bet my left one that the number goes way down amongst their players that don’t actually play in games(which is what a great deal of their portal entries are)
Iowa has done above average at retaining our players that we want to stay, to date.
That could obviously change at any time, but it shouldn’t be a reason to stray from this portal approach until/if it becomes a factor.

I would prefer to grab the high profile proven FBS starters, but I'm OK with what Iowa is doing. FCS has plenty of really good players who just need an opportunity with the Big Boys. Coach them up and see what they got. Some will sink, some will swim, just like high level High School Recruits.
If they create separation it can really help an unproven QB. I actually did wonder how the smaller jitterbugs might impact the running game. Hopefully the o-line and Phillips make up for any blocking shortcomings.
It does suck to think in a few years with a coaching change incoming the likelihood of a mass exodus is fairly high.
Vander Zee and HOWARD.....Kansas City kid. Played at Park Hill. Iowa had another kid from KC (played at Raytown high) named Desmond Hutson. He portalled out to UNI a couple of years ago.....

One big difference is Kirk won’t keep it a total secret when the time comes. The kids will know. Transition may be smoother than you think. Fran got fired. Bluder retired.
