Oiwa defeated Uemura in the G1 Final today. I was unfortunately nowhere close to being able to stay awake long enough to watch it live, but the internet is saying the match was one of the best G1 Finals ever

Jeff Cobb is back in New Japan. I would say never should have left but I’m sure WWE paid him more than New Japan would have even if WWE only paid him the minimum. And unless someone’s career or life is ruined by a career move, can’t really say anyone made a bad decision to take the money, especially in an industry where careers generally have a limited lifespan.

Yeah they announced it right at the end of the show. I had pegged him to make it to at least the semis since that was going to be in Scotland I believe.

The injury screws up multiple plans because he had a big match schedule for the ROH PPV next week - it was him vs. Lee Moriarity (c) for the Pure Championship and if Nigel lost his ROH career was over. So I thought with that stip he loses the ROH match then maybe Nigel advances to Wembley to have his retirement match.

Watching the G1 Final now. If you hate everything about modern wrestling matches and want to see the clock turned back a few decades to never-ending basic takedowns and holds then this is the match for you. I am thus far extremely bored with it thus far but the crowd seems to be into it. They essentially turned a 15-minute match into a 35-minute match.

Similar but different. Sabre is far more creative with what he does. This was like arm bars, wrist locks, headlocks, etc. Like beginners level wrestling holds. The crowd was into it and maybe it required me having watched more of previous bouts for it to get over with me, but I was largely bored.

I mean it was a very technically sound match, so I can't say from an objective standpoint it was bad. But to me it was boring.

I compare it this way: it's like if your favorite college basketball team was running a modern basketball system and then they brought in Tony Bennett to install his slowdown system he had at UVA. From a technical and results standpoint it was largely a successful system, that didn't make it subjectively entertaining though.

ZSJ would never work in WWE. I love ZSJ, but WWE is the worst fitting promotion in the world for him.

Basically the G1 Final more or less was dependent on having watched a bunch of other New Japan shows because the whole story of the match was that they got over the most basic of basic wrestling moves.

Since I had not watched anything more than the semifinals and finals, none of that stuff was over with me.

So I guess it's like watching MJF getting over a double clothesline, kangaroo kick, or headlock takeover without having watched any of the lore that led to that stuff getting over.

Currently a 9.72 with 232 votes. I have a hard time rating matches highly if you need to watch hours of backstory to get it. That doesn't stand the test of time because people aren't going to go back and watch the 18 previous days of G1 shows (and maybe more?) to get it.

I have been successfully convinced to watch the Yuya and Oiwa G1 matches and then rewatch the G1 finals. So we'll see if my opinion changes, I'm guessing it doesn't. But I'll keep an open mind about it, technical wrestling has always been an acquired taste for me, and these guys did the most basic of basic technical wrestling.
