(June 3, 2016)</strong> – West Virginia University Director of Athletics Shane Lyons has announced the 2016-17 men’s basketball non-conference schedule.</p><p></p><p>The Mountaineers will play 13 non-conference contests, including nine non-conference games in Morgantown.</p><p></p><p>WVU will open the regular season at home on Friday, Nov. 11 against Mount St. Mary’s. The Mountaineers will have home games against Mississippi Valley State, VMI, UMKC, Radford and Northern Kentucky. Texas A&M makes its first visit to Morgantown as part of this year’s SEC/Big 12 Challenge. WVU will have two games at home as part of the NIT Season Tip-Off.</p><p></p><p>At the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, the Mountaineers will play two games against either Florida State, Temple or Illinois in the NIT Season Tip-Off. The opponents for WVU’s two home games in the NIT Season Tip-Off have not been finalized.</p><p></p><p>This year, the Mountaineers will hold events in Wheeling, Beckley and Charleston. Mountaineer fans can see the basketball team for the first time in the Gold-Blue Debut on Thursday, Oct. 13 at the WesBanco Arena in Wheeling. The Mountaineers will play their lone exhibition game this season in Beckley at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center against WVU Tech on Saturday, Oct. 29. WVU will face Western Carolina in Charleston on Wednesday, Dec. 7.</p><p></p><p>"Since returning here nine years ago, I continue to realize the importance and passion West Virginia athletics has in this state,” said coach Bob Huggins. “We have tried to make ourselves accessible in all parts of the state. With this in mind, the Gold-Blue Debut will be in Wheeling, the exhibition game vs. WVU Tech will be in Beckley and we will continue our annual game in Charleston. We are excited to be able to do this for our fans in the northern panhandle and in the southern part of the state.</p><p></p><p>"We are looking forward to getting back to New York for the third season in a row. We know how much our fans love seeing the Mountaineers in New York. As usual, our annual non-conference tournament has a competitive field as well as a nationally ranked and Sweet 16 team from a year ago in Texas A&M coming to the Coliseum for the SEC/Big 12 Challenge. We’re pleased to start a home-and-home with Virginia and they will be a preseason Top 10 team.
