Whoa! The Yankees got Pudge straight up for Kyle Farnsworth? Are there some prospects or cash involved here?

I just can't believe that the Yankees pulled off such a one sided deal. I thought I missed something.

Lame attempt to try to be like HD6, though. Keep trying.

He is just filling in for the rest of the year until Posada comes back. I think it's great because i hate the Yankees. They bring in all these different players year in and year out and it kills their chemistry and they can't win.

which is old for a catcher to be sure, but he's hitting .295 with 5 home runs playing in Detroit with 32 RBI's and 6 SB's, which are pretty much in line with his numbers from the past three years, and very productive for a catcher his age. He's still Gold Glove caliber behind the plate as well. But beyond the numbers, the reason this deal seems so lopsided to me is that the Yankees basically gave up an inconsistent middle relief guy for a guy who has tremendous leadership skills, lots of success in the postseason, and is a great leader. And they got Pudge without giving up any prospects. We're talking about a Hall of Famer, unless he pulls a Pete Rose, for a 32 year old Kyle Farnsworth.

I honestly do not understand the Yankee way of thinking. Why Pudge? What do you gain when Posada comes back. Your current catcher is good enough to start on other teams in the MLB, so why? To add depth to your DH position. Well we have Giambi and Abreu, might as well throw in Pudge to add to a roster already chocked full of past their prime salary busters. If you mix them in with the rest of the overpaid (not that they all aren't) "superstars" you've got the reason you can't even spell World Series anymore... Seriously, Steinbrenner should cut just about every player on the team and just start from scratch using their farm system...

Well, the Yankees have been this way for YEARS. It eventually ruined them by the early 90's until George got suspended and then Brian Cashman and Buck Showalter were able to rebuild them into a WS winner by 1996 with solid players- many from their farm system.

Of course when George came back....

But the Yankees are all about having the most stars, and they and now the Red Sox have gotten caught up in a penis size contest that is basically ruining both of them. And in the meantime, the Tampa Bay Rays have caught both basically with players from their farm system.

As far as Posada, I wouldn't be surprised if they try to dump him and then keep Pudge. I think they might do what they did with Bernie Williams a couple of years ago where they offer to keep him around, but he wouldn't play very much. Also, if Pudge leaves they probably will get some draft picks. Not to mention that Posada had surgery on his shoulder today, so who knows if he will even come back this year or if he will ever be adequate as a catcher again.

Boston has very much used their farm system to keep them in contention. Pedroia and Ellsbury are both recent products of their farm system. I think both of them were drafted within the last two years and start everyday. I doubt anyone forgot but Papelbon came up through the farm system too. You might want to go back and look at their roster again Todd.

Edited to add that Cory Bucholz also came up through their farm system and threw a no hitter last year.

Posada isn't going anywhere..the yankees just inked him to a 4 year deal for 52.4 mil in the off-season.
Pudge is nothing but a mid-season rental. He is in the final year of his contract for $13mil, and the yankees are picking up the last 4 of that for his services. After the season, he will file for FA, collect the big check..and the yankees get a supp draft pick, while detroit got farnsworth...who is also in the the last year of his contract.
Its simple baseball economic near the baseball deadline, deal if you arent in it to win this seaon and have the talent.

As far as the red sox, the only way they compare to the yankees is payroll and still very much in different leagues (last season the yankees were at 218.3 million to the world champion red sox 155.4
The red sox are very good at developing the farm..as mentioned currently on the 25 man roster home-grown are:
Clay Buchholz (05)
Manny Delcarmen (00)
Jacoby Ellsbury (05)
Craig Hansen (05)
Jon Lester(02)
Jed Lowrie (05)
Justin Masterson (06)
Jonathan Papelbon(03)
Dustin Pedroia(04)
Kevin Youkilis (01)

Why Pudge? Because his contarct his over after this yeara and he fills on for the rest of the season while Posada is out. He is a much better hitter than Molina who is not an everyday catcher. And if for some reason Molina got hurt this year then the Yankees are screwed the rest of the way through with Moller being your only option. This was a great move for the Yankees. Bruney or Melancon will be brought up to replace Farnsworth and you upgrade your catcher position and dont have to pay him after this season

Jose Molina is playing plenty well enough defensively. I think he's thrown out the highest % of runners in the league. His offense isn't quite there but offense won't be their problem. Pitching will be... and Farnsworth isn't a world-beater but I think they''ll need him down the stretch.
