You are physiologically more prone to violence when your favorite team loses

Not only related to sports fans and when their team loses. It is found in everyday life. A fact lost on most.

I had a prof who had her own term for studies that "made the utterly obvious stupefyingly clear."

What that study tells me is some people need to grow the **** up. Becoming violent because one’s sports team lost a game is the equivalent of a toddler throwing a temper tantrum.
Well said. And I'll add after all these years/decades of futility and based on the results of the study, we should have one of the most angry and violent fanbases of just about anyone....but I don't think that holds true for us.

LOL. The RU sports community probably has had more than its fair share of provations. But, while I'm sure it's happened now and then over the years, I'm not aware of RU being known for violent confrontations amongst the fanbase.

I think alcohol, being the emotion magnifier it is, probably fuels a lot of the violence that occurs after sporting events worldwide.

Yes but we know many people really never do progress emotionally beyond adolescence.

I'd say it's the opposite. Failure breeds apathy. Apart from some people on this board, who probably DO throw furniture around the livingroom, not many people care enough to get pissed off. It's Rutgers, whadda ya expect? A win?

You must have missed the day they taught a analoygy’s in elementary school ! A toddler throwing a temper tantrum is normal . Some idiot resorting to violence because a team lost is not normal !! What a terrible analogy you just made ! Wow! Just wow !

Total ********. After nearly every city wins a pro or college championship there are rowdy crowds, cars set on fire etc!

Look at some of the fans at games. They are way beyond just wearing some gear. If you are so invested in a team that them losing is like having your family physically attacked, you really need some time out.
Add to this the gambling angle (ie losing big) and you have a very fertile place for violence.

The "study" was conducted in South America and fans there can go off the hook like they have an ejection seat.

US CFB doesn't come close to soccer in SA. I remember watching Brazil in World Cup and the team was a mess crying and praying on the field like execution was near.

"In the past few days, countless mental-health experts have opined on the subject. The president of the São Paulo Association of Sport Psychology, John Ricardo Cozac, said the behaviour of the team and their manager "demonstrated a dangerous lack of emotional control".

true story; while in Italy on business, Latzia threw a motorcycle on the field in protest

passion, nuts, over the top, not enough, one could argue any direction but other than love and war, sports brings out the crazy

I hope you were drunk when you posted that. 😉

Before you respond, go back, use your context clues, and think about it some more. You can do it! 😀

my favorite study was the one on Bloomberg (I think) that highlighted how those that vote democrat, are more violent and extreme than those who do not

Duhh......lol long time ago I decided I'm not going to be a fanatic...in pro sports, I just root for players and I'll decide which teams I'm interested in following based on style of play. I'll root for Rutgers but it's more like watching kids play little league type of thing. It became too much.

I watch people's whole mood and state of mind change every weekend, people crying, breaking tvs, fighting, wtf ?lol What am I? An idiot? The giants dont pay me to support them through all of their nonsense. Who told them drafting Daniel Jones at no. 6 was a good idea? Why would I be "loyal" to an incompetent organization? If I was invested in a company that constantly made decisions I don't agree with I'm going to sell. Same thing with sports except Im not invested in these teams I just like sports. This clarity has allowed to enjoy sports more. Lol I watch NFL Red zone on Sundays now..

This may be true as I was ready to beat the **** out of Ron Rivera after watching the Skins get destroyed by the Cowboys on Thanksgiving.
