I want to believe that 99% of hecklers do it for attention- basically to try to make the people around them laugh. It's harmless stupid fun- or at least it's supposed to be.

I just don't understand what they are trying to achieve by yelling that at a player. Surely, there is something else that they can come up with to heckle the player with.

If anybody around you could have thought up what you want to yell at the outfielder, it's probably not clever/funny enough to make it worth saying.

The whole point of heckling is to say stuff that will knock them off their game and make them notice the people behind them rather than what's in front of them. Yelling "Hey, (name of outfielder), (name of female relative) sucked my dick last night!" is neither clever nor effective.

The only time I consider it ok to just yell stupid, unoriginal stuff is when they screw up and cause an error or something, at which point everyone yells at him.

I would also like to note that I say all of this without even getting into the general backwards asshat someone makes themselves and their school appear to be by yelling **** like that. It's baffling.

Nothing is more annoying than a douchebag that constantly yells stuff. People don't go to a game to listen to the hecklers. There has to be good timing and originality.

I like "Throw it in the dirt" just fine, but a lot of the new fans have absolutely no clue when it's appropriate to use it.

We'll be down three runs in the fifth inning with an 0-2 count and some ******* freshman decides he wants to participate and starts yelling it.

I just think it encourages passive aggressiveness. I want our guys to knock a guy out of a game with hits. Playing stall ball is just so Little League.

And throw it in the dirt is equally if not more stupid. Sometimes a pitcher WANTS to throw it in the dirt to get a hitter to chase.

He HATED playing at MSU. Although he's a Huntsville native, some State fans got knowledge of his parents, his girlfriend, other personal stuff back in those pre-internet days, and heckled him throughout the games.
Kind of like Smoot-smack. That's creative heckling.

So just for point of reference....How many of ya'll have a place in the outfield in your name or at least are there, at the same location, for lets say 50% of the games? Agree bad heckling is worse than none, but seems to be lots of opinions and I wonder how many of those actually matter? And I'll explain that, if you live out of state and make 1 game every 3-4 years, your opinion doesn't matter. Yes, I am on the fence in left field and its in my name. Thanks. Also agree, if you can't come up with something besides race, then STFU!

Between the two of us and our friends these last two years, our opposition has loved us! We know how to heckle our left fielders, and they respect us for it... There's no room for racial slurs or meaningless
"that's why you're not playing professional ball" rants... We actually congratulate the players on good plays... Then we watch them at the plate, and talk trash about their swing... It's fun when you have a good left-fielder that will at least talk back to you. Most of them appreciate playing in front of a crowd that numbers more than 300... More of our fans should learn a little heckling etiquette...

playing the Montgomery Biscuits my buddy decided to yell to the right fielder " I eat biscuits like you for breakfast." Actually got the right fielder to laugh and look back to give us a thumbs up. It can be funny if it is appropriate and not some dumbass yelling obscenities the whole game.

The 1987 Regional we had against Ok. State, also had Western Carolina. I remember one game, where WCU was being pummelled. During yet another pitching change, the folks behind the Centerfield fence were offering the CF a BBQ sandwich. The CF looked at the dugout, saw no one was looking, and then ran back there and put one (wrapped in wax paper) in his back pocket. He at it on the bench after they (finally) came in. Later on, it was reported that WCU hadn't eaten since breakfast that morning and were famished. After the game, the whole team was fed by the folks out there.

BTW, that centerfield was African-American.

I think the Joey Belle and Ok. State "racist" stuff was made up to compensate for bad performances and/or acting like an *** all around (Belle was exactly called "Gentleman Joey" during his MLB career).</p>

But, like you said, the LFL gang knew EVERYthing about the MC leftfielder. His parents' names, his girlfriend's name, some embarrasing High School incident....I was extremely impressed. The dude would be the last guy out of the dugout every inning. In the eighth inning, he made a running catch for the 3rd out, and his hat flew off. He just sprinted for the dugout wihtout looking back. The centerfielder came over and picked up his hat for him.

But, yeah, I also heard racial slurs yelled at Barry Larkin when Michigan came down for the regionals. Of course, that was over 25 years ago.</p>

The whole "THROW IT IN THE DIRT" episode at Trustmark had the entire ballpark distracted. The UM hitters were looking up in the stands at the guy more than the game. You can't say they were completely focused in the box.

At the end of the day, it was just some drunk arsehole wanting the attention he never got from his father.

i didn't realize that my opinion of terrible heckling lost its importance when i moved away for a job to support my family.

calling you a douchebag is an understatement but hey, my opinion doesn't matter

i drew this 150 mile circle around starkville and looked for jobs within that area butwas unableto earn employment. so, i looked outside of that cirle and boom....DOUCHEBAG.</p>

But it should be done in good taste. The big SEC schools and some others now take pride in which place isthe toughest place to play in the outfield. A lot of hecklers do do it for attention but I think it is a great thing. As long as your are notbeingtoo derogatory and do it more to make the outfielder and others laugh, instead of making him feel an inch tall. It can get in their head and make them more tentative when going after a fly ball or tricky grounder. The racial stuff is terrible and uncalled for and I'm pretty sure anyone who does it at any school will immediately catch crap for it, but I support the outfield heckling. It's fun and entertaining as long as it's done the right way. Facebook research goes a long way before games.

Joey Belle played for LSU and when he was at the plate the chant was "buckwheat". He had a twin brother and he was known as "buckwheats brother" which was a little harder to chant. The guy from Oklahoma State that accused fans of yelling racist stuff was Blackmon. He dropped his pants and mooned the crowd and ending up being suspended for it and may have missed the World Series.
