I'm no Gee supporter, but if getting drunk and embarrassing your employers (who pay you rather handsomely) twice in a span of six weeks isn't a firing offense, what is? If Huggs couldn't stay out of trouble for even two months he's got bigger problems than whether he gets to coach another season of basketball. His daughter claiming the university should have gotten him help instead of firing leaves out the part where maybe his family should have talked to him about it and gotten him help. He can certainly afford it unless he spent tens of millions of dollars on booze and cigars. The average person with a drinking problem isn't going to be able to afford much more than AA meetings. A guy pulling seven figures for years had other options. I get defending your dad. I really do. But maybe if she and other family members hadn't looked the other way for decades it wouldn't have come to this. A friend of mine's wife was a high-level DI tennis player who gave lessons to kids at her country club during the summers. This club was in the Cincy area and Huggs' daughters were among her pupils. She said Huggs was the nicest, most down-to-earth celebrity she'd ever met and that he knew the name of every employee at the club, down to busboys and landscapers. She also said she that every single time she saw him he had a drink or a koozy in one hand. That's Huggs in a nutshell: a good dude with a big problem.
