Your expectations for MSU basketball

Like many others, I feel that Stansbury's time at MSU has come and gone - mostly because he hasplateauedas a coach. Averaging 20 wins a season, around a 50% NCAAT appearance percentage with an early exit, and a 25% winning percentage against ranked teams isn't really cutting it for me anymore. I would expect the next coach to be able to build off of what we already have in place. Some Stanbury apologists have said it would take $4MM a year to hire a coach to take us to the next level. I find this ridiculous since I can count the number of coaches that make that kind of money on my hands and we don't need one of those guys to get us to what I consider the "next level"<div>
</div><div>What I would consider reasonable expectations for what the next guy should be able to accomplish are as follow:</div><div>
  • NCAAT appearances 3 out of every 5 years (60%)
  • Finish the season in the Top 25 as often as above.
  • Sweet 16 appearance 1 out of every 4 trips (25%)
<div>These are all marks that are higher than what we are accomplishing now but not as high as UF or UK, who I feel are the only programs above us at this point - and perhaps Mizzou.</div></div><div>
</div><div>What do y'all feel are reasonable expectations for the next coach.</div>

Winning is the priority, but I'd also like to seen players thatconsistentlyhustle and give a **** on defense. I'd like to see a team that looks like they understand the fundamentals of the game as well. I'd like to be able to watch a game and not say WTF 2 dozen times during the last 15 minutes.<div>
</div><div>It's the difference between the Croom 7 win team and the Mullen 7 win team.</div>

I wish these were reasonable expectations, but I think two of those are a bit high, especially 3 top 25 finishes every 5 years. I'd go with:
  • 2 NCAAT appearances every 4 years (which this may even be high based on history, but it doesn't feel high)
  • Sweet 16 appearance 1 out of every 4 trips (I agree with you here)
  • Finish season in Top 25 1 out of every 4/5 years (this is the biggest difference - what it sounds like you're saying is "be a top 4/5 seed 3 times every 5 years", which is absolutely unrealistic. If this is what you think, then you should be expecting more than 1 Sweet16 appearance every 4 trips. I think we should expect a top 5 seed once every 4/5 years, knowing we'll probably squeek our way in the tourney sometimes as well.)

On paper, the current season seems like it's not a bad one, but this has been one of the most difficult seasons to endure because of the way we play the game. This trend seems to be going in the wrong direction too.

for any coach including Stans would be to do about what hehas done EXCEPT go a little futher in the NCAAs every now and then. Your "expectations" are something we have never even approached before. That is setting up whoever we hire to fail.

I expect to make the NCAAs as an at large at least eight out of every 13
years (Rick's number of full seasons). I rarely expect to win the SEC tournament, but
I'll take it whenever I can get it. Of those NCAA trips, I expect
to win two games in a tournament once every six years. Personally I
think the best way to do this is be seeded 7 or better, but if we
advance from the 12/13 hole, I'll take it. I never, ever expect us to go
beyond the SS, but would gladly take it at any time. The other five
years I would look for at least 2-3 NIT bids. I can stomach a couple of
rebuilding years if they are balanced by that moderate level of national
success.

So for Rick's tenure thus far I would have expected:
NCAA - 8 with SS or better - 2
NIT - 2
No postseason - 3

We are at:
NCAA - 6 with SS or better - 0
NIT - 4
No postseason - 3

FWIW, Richard Williams was:
NCAA - 3 with SS or better - 2

NIT - 2

No postseason - 7
