We gave up 286 yards rushing to oklahoma state....and it was largely done through the zone/end read that kept working. that puts us at 107th in the nation in defending the run.

Auburn on the other hand rushed for 297 yards against washington state which is good for 18th in the country...again, it was largely accomplished through a zone/end read scheme....75 yards of which occurred on a single play.

what happens when you match the 18th best rushing attack against the 107th worst team at defending the rush?

and if that wasnt troubling enough, ole miss is 40th, and texas a&m is 41st with jff only rushing 6 times with 2 tailbacks that averaged over 5 ypc against rice. Those are just 3 teams in division (auburn, aTm, om) that run the read HUNH type offense....we need to get MUCH better really, really fast.

yes, our offense is the giant gorilla in the room, but i think that giant gorilla has a smaller brother (how small is yet to be seen) in the other corner of the room that not many people want to address. im not trying to hate on collins, but i feel like a red flag might be getting ignored because the offense is SO bad. autry and the backers need to get fixed asap. we cant have 3 guys cave on the rb like we did vs osu (goal-line play). we simply arent disciplined enough and that needs to change.

I'm looking game to game. If our offense can keep the defense off the field by getting first downs then we'll be fine (by fine I mean under 200 yards rushing). If Auburn shuts down Perkins though, then we are in serious trouble. The defense will get gassed and they'll run right through us like **** through a goose.

my concern is that they didnt know exactly what to do...tried this, tried that, then boom, they found a qb and scheme that worked and we were powerless against it. the way the first half ended, it had me leaning that way. in the 3rd and 4th, we got rolled....ie, they asserted themselves before we reached exhaustion...thats my concern anyway.

agreed on the offense though...if they cant handle bidness, its going to get ugly and no defense in america can fight that kind of fight without feeling demoralized by 400 3 and outs.

considering even I was aware that this diamond formation was going to be something that is used across the football landscape this season, I'm not sure how "it was new and we didn't know how to defend it" is supposed to make me feel better. They pulled that formation out and I immediately turned to a buddy and told him that I'd read several articles over the past month about that formation.

Correct. Dana was the one who brought in that new wrinkle. First time we actually implemented it a few times in game was 2010 vs OU.

I was very impressed with the secondary and the pigs in the trenches for you guys. Sad to hear about Russell though. I hope for an injury-free year for you guys.

Meh, mostly the same. Inside Zones w/ and w/o motion, Outside Zone. Although we did add one play in---The Dash Keep with Walsh.

Trust me, we are not used to the continued use of zone reads. We're used to being pass-happy offense. Seemed your secondary made sure there were no deep shots, so we had to tailor to Walsh's game.

That's probably what confused us so much. We're not used to tailoring game to fit our qb's strength.

Defense was actually a shock to us all for the most part. We did get a new, more aggressive DC in Glenn Spencer. Bill Young (our DC last 4 years) was ready to go to pasture. We constantly berated him on our boards because he refused to play aggressive D. Just 10 yard cushions and let us get nickel and dimed all the way.

Spencer likes a more aggressive defense. Another guy who had a horrific last year, but seems to have righted the ship is Justin Gilbert (had that interception on the sideline). They're more experienced and seem to enjoy playing for Spencer.

I was surprised to come on here and see such disdain for the Dawgs game. Their offensive play-calling was atrocious, but we've only been held under 28 points twice in the past 30 games I believe. Ironically enough, the other was against KU---20-14 last year in a monsoon.

Side question: Does Mullen always chew on his play charts? I didn't know if he was nervous or it could just be his thing. Thought I'd ask.

It's ok-- Gundy's thing is hair gel and a visor. Top 5 looks of all-time.

We did last year when Young was too old to even function sitting down. Spencer would be on the field and Young would be in the booth.

Now, I believe Spencer is just on the field and Yurcich (Our OC) is up in the booth as well.

It's funny.... a lot of our fans were like that as well as recent as 2007. Thank god for T. Boone Pickens.

Everyone looks at me like im crazy when I'm excited by any kind of win the Pokes get. Just habit from going into every game an underdog less than a decade ago.
Gundy couldnt call offensive plays to save his life and our defense couldn't stop Stillwater High School.

I'll be rooting for the dawgs to right the ship. I still remember Smoot and Prather covering 1/3 of the Earth. They'll be back.

There is no red flag. The defense was great. When you can't sustain a drive, and you keep giving the ball to a team with their speed, they are going to score points. Our team obviously hadn't prepared for the "diamond", but let's be realistic: with our offensive performance, they would have scored those second half points whether they were running the ball or passing.

two things about these pics...

one, in the bottom pic, i wonder which 2 of the four diamond players we should be keying on....here is a hint, its not either of the 240 lb fullbacks....they arent getting the ball unless its short yardage and they may lead backers to the wrong hole if they are keying on them.
