Music Makers strikes out once again. Third Eye Blind, Eric Church and now Zac Brand Band? That is weak.

Wake me up when Music Makers gets a good band to play. Seriously, has anybody not heard Zac Brown Band perform? I mean, they are a mainstay at local bars all around the state. Nothing new here move along...

Randolph played a couple times, widespread played (2001?), moe., the wailers.... hell, they even got Gavin Degraw right before he exploded (and subsequently fizzled)

I feel as though I'm missing a few, anyone care to refresh my memory?

I wouldn't pay a dime to see any of the guys mentioned, but people around here don't want to see anybody unless they have heard them on the radio. It sucks, but until the crowd changes the music won't. I saw Ryan Bingham play at Daves a few years ago. It was one of the best shows I've seen anywhere, but not many people saw it because he didn't come on 94.9 every 10 minutes. Everyone has different tastes in music, but until people support the live music scene better, we are stuck with the same acts over and over.

I understand what you local guys are getting at, and if I lived there would feel the same. However, I now live away from Vegas and haven't done the whole bar seen due to marriage and kids in a while. I had no plans to go to SBW, but will now due to the ZBB. I haven't had a chance to see them and if I can while supporting my school I will. Just the other side of the coin.

Just because we didn't get someone from the 91.1 Sunday night blues/jazz hour doesn't mean it will be weak.

I would say Zac Brown Band is a great pull by Music Makers when taking into consideration their scheduling body of work. I, for one, am looking forward to it.

Yes there are people who haven't heard him perform. Not everyone is lucky enough to still be a student at MSU. Great, he played Rick's a few times. But he was on tour with Dave Matthews recently, and is touring with Kenny Chesney this year. He's also played with Buffet some. They're not exactly a bar band.

So give it a rest. They got a band that people have heard of, have heard on the radio, and will be playing in NFL stadiums this summer. Wanna keep your hippie cred? Go to Dave's that night. But remember, I'll still look down on you because it used to be a real hippie bar. Not a fratty sports bar with bands people think are cool because they wear knitted toboggans and smoke cloves. You had crawl to escape the cigarette smoke, you could escape to the porch to get stoned, wells were 75 cents, there was a 50/50 chance you'd get your drinks because the waitress was high as a kite, and the only tvs were a 13 incher behind the bar and a huge wooden box set. And before my time? I bet it was even scuzzier and people thought the music was better.

So go sell your snobby **** somewhere else. He's gonna draw a crowd.

Back when we were at State, we had Neil Diamond, Brooklyn Bridge, B.J. Thomas, The Lettermen and people bitched back then because we didn't get the Rolling Stones Byrds, or Moody Bluesin Vegas...! Same tune, different time!

I rarely keep up with country music. I'm a casual follower at best. However, the Zac Brown band is one of the few country bands getting regular attention outside the the folks you routinely hear on country music radio. The last album went double platinum and the most recent current album has charted 1 on both the US Country and Billboard 200 charts. They are plastered all over the country music world right now - and that's just an observation from a guy that rarely tunes to CMT or country radio.

Not my kind of music at all, but they are FAR from a local bar band. That's ridiculous. Considering that MS is such a huge country music state, this is actually a very very solid booking by Music Makers this year.

1. I won't be at Daves that night because I won't be in Starkville.

2. Unfortunately, I'm not a student anymore.

3. Yes they will draw a crowd because most people do listen to ****** music.

since Robert Randolph and the Wailers. But I understand the selection because, let's face it, most people like ****** music. If they are gonna get a mainstream country artist, I can handle Zac Brown band. They are actually talented musicians and have some good songs(not the pop culture hits they have on the radio.) They actually get down and jam when they want to.

I agree. I kind of like Zac Brown. Him and Jamey Johnson are about the only new country act I can stomach these days. I don't have any musical ability myself but my brother plays somewhat professionally. He has sat in with Jamey Johnson and says that his band is really talented. Most of the "musicians" out today on the radio are horrible.

Zac Brown Band by all accounts I have heard are a very talented and respectable group and should not be lumped into the typical "radio country" category. True, many "radio country" artists are moreso entertainers than they are musicians, but many are still talented. Side note: I hate the cookie cutter rascal flatts country singer earring gel hair frosted tips garbage just as much as the rest

All this being said, I hear Zac Brown writes all their own **** and performs for the crowd they are playing for..about all you can ask for in any variety of music to be a respectable band.

On a more macro scale, Music Makers as a wholeMUST improve their booking trends. One can only ask so much of college students and be able expect a respectable product given that it's a new batch of scrubs every year. Music Makers/SA must realize the degradation of MSU's potential as a music venue. When you book bands like Third Eye Blind or Gavin Degraw, or Darius Rucker, it sets the tone for bands in the future.

**When a big name band sees the garbage acts we put through our festivals, unless we throw a crazy $ figure at them, their talent agents will see a concert at MSU as a step in the wrong direction and advise against it completely.

Tina Turner, etc. The mid to late 80's at State were AWESOME for music!! We got the hottest bands like they did in Biloxi, B'ham, Nashville, etc., back then to play the Hump. They were not past prime when they played here but were the biggest/hottest bands in the world when they played at State. Why can't MM get anyone more than a small audience band? These small bands/performers may all be award winners but who cares about awards?

Honestly I'm a huge Steely Dan fan and recovering Panic fan. It should not surprise you that some people do not like bands like Zac Brown Band. Not everybody likes poppy *** country music just like not everybody likes Dan.

I feel like that's way too much information for the interwebs.

Either way: I have been looking for that "blowout" band for Super Bulldog Weekend for years. It has not happened yet. I know you can't please everybody but that one band has not come to Starkville in years.

But I think you're contradicting yourself. Either way, it's not really that big of a deal, because some will be thrilled with Zac Brown and some will not. Just like some were thrilled with Nickelback in 2002 and some were not. Just like some were thrilled with 112 and some were not. That's just the way it is with music.

In terms of popularity, Zac Brown may be the closest they've gotten to the "blowout" band which you seek.

The best thing Music Makers has done since I've been at State is book Tea Leaf Green at the amphitheatre in what I believe was 2008. Sad that the turnout wasn't that good. I was shocked when I first came to school here at how many people legitimately listen to the likes of Creed, Nickelback, Disturbed, etc.

Who gives a **** if it draws a crowd? It's average music at best and that's the disappointing part. Sucks that Music Makers have to go for something that will sell rather than a decent band.

Common 17ing sense and economics? It's a festival type environment to draw the masses to have a good time. If you want to sit around and scratch your beard listening to "good music" go buy the most recent Ray Lamontagne record and cry by yourself. Let the people that actually want to stimulate the economy and give Starkville a decent party book a band that will draw more than 50 folks that would rather not slit their wrists. It's a party...lighten up!

I can actually speak to some of this as I helped book some of those bands back in the day and still do in another market.

Music Makers scored big with Zach Brown. Every school in the country wants them and they are easily grossing 150-250k per show.
It is a good thing recent college students help pick the bands, because if some on this board were booking the bands they liked back in their day, Music Makers would lose money every time. Widespread couldn't even sell 1000 tickets in our market a few months back and the show was canceled. They still have their niche cities, but jam music doesn't sell like it use to.

I feel like the Reflector writes an article on this every year, "Why Don't we Get Big Concerts Anymore"? Because back in the 80's, Starkville was one of the few places with a big coliseum and the routing of bands worked perfectly. Now there are plenty of venues to hit between Atlanta and New Orleans, that have minimal scheduling conflicts (i.e. no basketball) and they are venues that do business often with booking agencies. So the agents keep sending them back to the same venues.

All colleges are usually priced almost double a regular full-time venue. Almost no school in the country get regularly scheduled large concerts, unless a large corporate management group runs their venue and has ties to corporate concert promoters like AEG Live.

It is completely market driven, and I hope you see how hard Music Makers has to work to pull a show of this size away from other venues.
