Playing in the West Coast Conference gave Gonzaga a cakewalk season which probably was a reason that Baylor, playing in the toughest conference in America, embarrassed the Zags so badly in the March Madness title game. 4 of the 10 teams, including Gonzaga, had a worst non-conference record than conference record. West Coast teams lost THIRTY SIX non-conference games! West Coast conference is not in the Power 5 or the Little 5 so that makes it, at best, the 11th best conference in America. Every member is a private, faith-based institution. Except for Gonzaga, no Notre Dame among the other 9 teams. Let’s be fair. Gonzaga did beat Kansas, 102-90; Auburn, 90-67; West Virginia, 87-82; Iowa, 99-88; Virginia, 98-75; Oklahoma, 87-71; Southern Cal, 85-66; and UCLA in the March Madness thriller of the century in overtime, 93-90. And got whipped by Baylor in the March Madness title game that the Bears started 11-1 and never let the Zags get closer than 9 and was up by as much as 19 before Baylor let its entire bench have the thrill of playing in the title game. Much tougher competition than the West Coast for the Zags, but not for the Bears. Gonzaga got a free pass every time it played in the West Coast Conference. West Coast has had 32 NBA players, some for only one season, most notably Bill Russell of San Francisco and John Stockton of Gonzaga, both NBA Hall of Famers. Teams in the West Coast Conference: Gonzaga BYU Loyola Marymount Pepperdine Pacific Santa Clara Saint Mary’s San Francisco Lost 83-52 to Baylor in only game played by Big 12 team against a West Coast team. By 31 points. No wonder Gonzaga went unbeaten in the West Coast. San Diego Portland
