Was he extended for stability perception to a potential baseball coach, or was he extended because we got our baseball coach?

negotiate against yourself. the MS State way. nobody was coming to snatch Selmon away. There was no reason to bump up like that, or even extend him before he's even made a hire of consequence that works out well. If he was that hot of a commodity, he'd already be gone. Allegedly, he's already interviewed with three or four schools (2 of which were HBCUs), and nobody has hired him

What happens with the baseball program has zero impact on Selmon’s job
I disagree. And my suspicion is that there are a number of people in positions of authority or influence who see the job of AD as more than fundraising. An AD that sucks at identifying coaching talent and closing the deal on important coaching hires is not long for employment.

The extension after '21 was completely acceptable. The others, not so much.
He mounted a good horse and rode it or sat in the drivers seat and drove a fast car to victory in '21. The next 2 years when be didn't have that horse or car he went 53-56 overall and good enough for last place and next to last in conference. The last 2 seasons he went 24-27 in conference (games before Parker only).

There'll always have an asterisk by '21 when I see his name associated with that team.

Then why fire him before the season was even over and also have to pay a large buyout? Why hot let him ride it out till contract was over since it has "zero" impact on his job?

No asterisk in necessary....there is already one fanbase that tries to apply one to '21.

A) He's done a good job modernizing State's NIL and fundraising.
B) A revolving door at AD has led to so poor decisions in coach hiring (See Arnett, Zach). You can't stop Blue Bloods from poaching an AD, but at least we don't have to worry about him making a lateral move.
C) It's a $25,000 bump with incentives, not a huge pay raise (relatively speaking).

See me after we hire a baseball coach for an update on how I feel about this guy.
No school administration outside of maybe Dallas Baptist has ever made an Athletic Director hiring/firing/extension decision based on the trajectory of the baseball program.

The cadence is a little too fast for the Maroon / White cheer. They're new; work in progress and all that.
Somebody in the stadium can walkie talkie down to the guy under the bleachers that is flipping breakers to slow it down a little, no sense in automating it when you can save money*

I think that most can agree that it has less impact than football and fundraising, but it's also definitely not zero. Not for this fanbase and set of donors
from the on3 story:

Earlier this year, Selmon and MSU finalized a deal that extended him through 2029, a one-year addition to a contract that has him at the max years allowable by state law. The news was first reported by 247Sports on Wednesday, but the extension was reportedly signed back in February on 2025.

I disagree, it has essentially no impact. We could miss a Regional the next 5 years but if we are winning in football and Jans continues to do his thing, his job is safe.

If a SEC institution hires or fires an AD based off the baseball program, then they should be kicked out of the conference. All the negative economic impact associated with the university and town, that will inevitably come their way, is deserved.

Extremely impressive to immediately devalue your pride and perception of MSST in the first sentence, and then follow it up by saying an SEC AD has not only interviewed but failed to land a job at 2 HBCUS. Possibility the Poorest of Poor Ol’ takes I’ve ever read

That’s fine. I’ve got no problem with Selmon. Seems like a good fundraiser. Even if he is interviewing with other schools - I’d rather have someone people want to talk to.

Speaking of ADs and slight hijack, has anyone had a better turnaround than the cheerleader in the last 6 months? On November 10th UF was 4-5 in football, their bball coach was being accused of stalking and harassment and then football wins 5 straight. No evidence is found on Golden and they win a NC.

No doubt perception of Selmons job hinges on Lebby year 2, but the baseball hire is a factor as well. It’s his second significant hire and a splash gives him goodwill for 2 months with no sports taking place.

The more money we make in football, the more we can spend on the other sports. He has to get football winning again in order to raise donations to the next level. Baseball kind of takes care of itself (Lemonis is the exception). We have pretty good basketball coaches but need them to keep winning and improving.
