Alabama forward Derrion Reid enters NCAA transfer portal

Alabama forward Derrion Reid has entered the NCAA transfer portal, On3 has learned. Reid played one season for the Crimson Tide.
The 6 foot 8 freshman averaged 6.0 points, 2.8 rebounds and 0.7 assists for Alabama during the 2024-25 season. He appeared in 24 games for the Crimson Tide while on Nate Oats’ roster, starting three of those.
Reid scored in double figures during six games during his freshman year. He finished with nine points during four other occasions.
A nagging hamstring injury kept him out for several games during January, and again in February after an initial return. He was able to return for Alabama’s SEC Tournament run and eventual March Madness push.
Alabama fans had high expectations for Reid entering the 2024-25 campaign. Before arriving on campus, Reid was the No. 16 overall player and No. 6 small forward in the 2024 recruiting cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, which is a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services.

According to his On3 recruiting profile, Reid held offers from Tennessee, Auburn, Florida, Kansas, among several others before committing to the Crimson Tide. It won’t be surprising to see a long list of suitors looking to acquire his talent for next season.
“Derrion’s one of our best positional size, athletic defenders. And he’s done very good jobs on different guys when he’s been healthy,” Alabama head coach Nate Oats said of Reid during his recovery. “It would be great to have him. … It’s hard not getting the reps, and he’s missed maybe 35, 36 percent of our practice reps this year.
“I think he’s going to be a pro. He came in as a McDonald’s All-American, he’s got all the intangibles as far as tough, great attitude, high IQ, he’s athletic. A lot of the stuff the pros are looking for. We really don’t want to hurt his long-term career by rushing something to win a game or two. We’re trying to do what’s right by him.”
As of Wednesday, March 26, over 1,250 Men’s College Basketball players have entered the NCAA Transfer Portal. That number is expected to grow as the 2024-25 college basketball season nears its end.
