Joel Klatt raves about Ty Simpson in Heisman race, throws shade at Arch Manning hype

Alabama has won four consecutive games and quarterback Ty Simpson‘s stock is soaring. During an appearance on The Next Round on Monday, FOX Sports analyst Joel Klatt took a shot at Texas QB Arch Manning while complimenting Simpson.

“If Ty Simpson’s name was Ty Manning, we would cancel the end of the season Heisman Trophy ceremony and just do it now,” Klatt said. “That’s the best pure passing game in college football. Simpson has been the best quarterback in college football from a passing perspective.

“… Simpson’s incredible. I get to buzz through other tapes, but I really study the two teams that I’m going to do, and Wisconsin just so happened to have Alabama on their schedule. So, last week, when I’m preparing for Wisconsin, I’m really diving in to the Alabama film when they played Wisconsin. And, there were like five times where I paused the film. I was like, ‘Whoa. Like, that was a big league, top-three draft pick throw.'”

According to BetMGM, Simpson has +800 odds to win the Heisman Trophy this season. He’s tied with Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith for the third-best odds in the country. The pair only trail Miami QB Carson Beck and Oregon QB Dante Moore.

Simpson was spectacular in Alabama’s 30-14 win over Vanderbilt on Saturday, completing 23-of-his-31 pass attempts for 340 yards and two touchdowns, compared to one interception. He boasts 1,478 passing yards and 13 touchdowns this season.

He’s only thrown one pick and has completed 70.3% of his pass attempts. For comparison, Arch Manning has amassed 1,151 passing yards and 11 touchdowns this season, while throwing five interceptions.

On Saturday, Simpson will have another chance to add to his résumé when Alabama squares off against No. 14 Missouri at 11 a.m. CT. The game will air live on ABC.
