Auburn assistant coach Chad Prewett is planning to step down, he announced via social media. He joined the Tigers’ staff in 2014 and became an assistant coach in 2023.

Prewett was part of Bruce Pearl’s original staff at Auburn and served in a variety of roles with the program. He served as chief of staff, director of operations, interim assistant coach and special assistant before moving up to assistant coach in 2023.

Prior to his time at Auburn, Prewett put together a decorated career coaching at the high school level. In his announcement, he said he’s exploring ministry opportunities as he leaves basketball behind.

“After an incredible journey and 30 unforgettable years in coaching, I’ve made the decision to step away from my lifelong dream of coaching at Auburn University to pursue a new calling in ministry through UniteUS and other ministry opportunities,” Prewett wrote. “This decision comes with deep reflection, prayer, and peace, knowing it’s time to follow where God is leading me next.

“I want to express my deepest gratitude to Coach Bruce Pearl and the entire Auburn Basketball staff. Thank you for a ride I will never forget. … But more than the accomplishments, it has always been about the journey. The relationships I’ve built with my brothers on this staff and the young men I’ve had the privilege to coach will remain the most cherished part of my time here.”

During Prewett’s 20-year career at the high school level, he spent time at Atmore (Ala.) Escambia Academy, Mobile (Ala.) Faith Academy and Auburn (Ala.) Lee-Scott Academy. He amassed a 139-31 record with the Lee-Scott boys program, leading the Warriors to a 2012 state title and a runner-up finish in 2011, along with two Final Four berths in 2009 and 2010. He also coached the girls team to four state titles, a runner-up finish and two Final Fours.

Chad Prewett was the 2009 AISA Coach of the Year and won the OA News Coach of the Year award four times. He also coached Track and Field, winning titles 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Auburn made its second-ever Final Four appearance this past season – both of which have come under Pearl’s leadership – as the Tigers came in as the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. They finished the year with a 32-6 overall record following the loss to Florida in San Antonio.
