Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze announced senior receiver Horatio Fields, an offseason transfer from Wake Forest, suffered a broken foot in Tuesday’s practice that will require season-ending surgery. Freeze revealed the injury during Wednesday’s SEC Coaches Teleconference.

“Unfortunately he broke his foot, he’ll have to have surgery tomorrow and that’s a huge loss for us,” Freeze said of Fields. “He was kind of the leader of that receiver room, who knew every position and gave us flexibility to do a lot of things. A difficult loss.”

The 6-foot-2 Fields has provided a relatively young Auburn receiver room with much-needed experience through the first four games of the 2025 season, ranking third on the team with 12 catches for 106 yards and one touchdown. Fellow offseason addition Eric Singleton Jr., a transfer from Georgia Tech, leads the team with 22 receptions for 209 yards and two touchdowns, while former 2024 five-star recruit Cam Coleman has 13 receptions for a team-high 237 yards and two scores himself.

Fields’ best game at Auburn (3-1, 0-1 SEC) came in Week 2 when he hauled in a season-high six receptions for 51 yards and an 11-yard touchdown from fellow transfer Jackson Arnold in a 42-3 rout of Ball State on Sept. 6. Having only played four games, it’s unclear if Fields will opt to redshirt this season and return in 2026 or if he will simply turn his attention to future endeavors.

Fields entered the transfer portal this offseason after finishing the 2024 season with 39 receptions for 463 yards and four touchdowns at Wake Forest. He joined an Auburn receiver room that already included returning sophomores Malcolm Simmons and Coleman, junior Perry Thompson, and Singleton.

Todd McShay high on Auburn wide receivers, ability to help Jackson Arnold

Former ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay praised what he’s seen from the Auburn receiving corps this season, especially when it comes to Singleton and Coleman. But he was also complimentary of what Fields accomplished so far this season.

Eric Singleton. Burner. 104 (receptions) for 1468 (yards) and nine (touchdowns) in the last two years at Georgia Tech. Chess piece on offense,” McShay said during an episode of The McShay Show. “It’s not just Singleton, it’s Cam Coleman. And they added this guy Horatio Fields from Wake Forest, also really productive and highly sought after. So Hugh Freeze has got some dudes now. And they’ve got to believe in Jackson Arnold to make him the guy to operate this guy so that’s gonna be fascinating.”
