Head coach Scott Satterfield is returning to Cincinnati for his third season at the helm, where he’s led the Bearcats to an 8-16 (4-14) record. To say it’s been a disappointing two seasons for Cincinnati since Luke Fickell departed for Wisconsin in 2022 would be an understatement.

An anonymous Big 12 head coach even predicted in Athlon Sports’ 2025 College Football Preview that Cincinnati will fire Satterfield if the Bearcats don’t show results this season.

“This is a hot-seat job, and they have to show results this season or it’s probably done,” the coach said. “The school or the AD, or both, locked in Satt [Scott Satterfield] on a big contract, and that’s kept him safe, but this is the season they have to show results.”

Satterfield left Louisville and assumed the vacancy at Cincinnati following the 2022 season in a move that Bearcat fans didn’t seem to be too excited with. In his time at Louisville, Satterfield led the Cardinals to a 25-24 (15-18) record over four seasons (2019-22).

“All of these people that will come out with these polls have literally no idea,” Satterfield said in May about people discussing his team. “Everybody’s going to have an opinion. Most of the time they base a lot of it on what you did the previous year. It’s just talk. It really comes down to who can stay healthy and what matchups you have.”

In a twist of good news for both Satterfield and the Bearcats, they return a nice core of pieces from last season’s team. This includes starting quarterback Brendan Sorsby, running back Evan Pryor and defensive tackle Dontay Corleone along with some solid portal pieces.

“We have to utilize his ability to run and [Sorsby] welcomes that,” Satterfield said last month. “When you can run your quarterback, you put so much pressure on opposing teams. Particularly, when it’s third down in the red zone. He’s a big kid, almost 240 pounds. One of the guys he looks up to is Josh Allen.”

Last season, the Bearcats boasted the nation’s No. 36 ranked offense (420.6 YPG) and the No. 85 ranked defense (385.4 YPG). With Satterfield on the hot seat, the Bearcats will probably at least have to make their first bowl game since 2022 to ensure confidence in the veteran head coach.
