One of the most debated college quarterbacks throughout the 2024 season and moving into the next NFL Draft is Shedeur Sanders of the Colorado Buffaloes. Some people, including his head coach and father Deion Sanders, think that he could be a top pick in the draft. However, former NFL MVP Cam Newton doesn’t necessarily agree.

Recently, Newton explained to Shannon Sharpe on Club Shay Shay that he doesn’t see Sanders as a top-four pick. However, he does think that one of his father’s former teams, the Atlanta Falcons, would make sense as a fit for him.

“Atlanta [would be ideal],” Newton said.

Sharpe countered that, pointing out the massive contract that the Falcons just gave to Kirk Cousins. So, it would be strange to draft a quarterback high the next year.

“We’ll figure all that other out. You ever heard of dead cap? We’ll figure all that other out. If Prime can get Shedeur in Atlanta, let me tell you something, all businesses, including Magic City, will be appreciative of that damn pick right there. Real talk. So, these are the things that…but I don’t think he’ll be a top-four pick as he was on record as saying. And that’s fine.”

There are big expectations for Shedeur Sanders to be a top draft pick when he does make the move to the NFL. Analysts like Skip Bayless think he’s already better than Dak Prescott. Meanwhile, Deion Sanders says he’ll be a top-two pick and suggested that they’ll even force their way onto certain teams in the draft like Eli Manning.

“I remember having a conversation with Deshaun Watson when he got drafted because Deshaun, just like Justin Fields, they came through my 7-on-7 program…I remember telling him, ‘You’re in the best situation than any other of the quarterbacks.’ I think Deshaun went 12th to Houston. You got a quality receiver in [DeAndre Hopkins] and the level of expectation is, you know what I’m saying? I think really too, and I say this humbly, my success in the league was not good for the upcoming rookie quarterbacks,” Newton said.

“When you see guys like Peyton Manning. Peyton Manning didn’t become good until after his second and third year. They threw him out there in the fire, but if Peyton Manning was drafted in this day and age of expectations, no, no, hell haw. But when they see a guy like Joe Burrow or they see guys that have early success…you want to go somewhere where you can really take your time and become the guy your way and that’s just some of the things that you gotta think about.”

Ultimately, Cam Newton thinks that Deion Sanders is going to want to help set up Shedeur Sanders for NFL success. So, sliding in the draft isn’t the worst thing for him.

“So, from Prime’s perspective, it’s not just weather that I think he’s trying to run away from. It’s the situation. When you think about it and do you say we to a Giants, and he doesn’t have the talent that he’s capable of having, or a Las Vegas? See what I’m saying? Like I see what you’re trying to do over here. We gonna take our talents over there.”
