Lost in the shuffle of Colorado‘s 45-42 win over No. 17 TCU was how well some members of the secondary played when the game was on the line in crunch time. But the secondary suffered a blow, with a Myles Slusher injury in the contest spoiling things a bit.

Slusher is a veteran transfer from Arkansas, arriving after dealing with some injuries in 2022. Now he’ll have to hit the shelf again.

“Slush has been a guy that’s been consistent,” coach Deion Sanders said. “We ask a lot of him, not only on the defensive side of the ball and special teams, but I think Slush is banged up. Are we saying that? Or we not saying that? Yeah, Slush is banged up.”

The former Arkansas safety sounds likely to miss a few weeks to undergo a minor surgery.

“I don’t think he’s going to play this week,” Sanders said. “But he’s banged up and I want to do what’s best for him right now instead of what’s best for us right now. I don’t want him just lagging and continuing this. I’d rather him go, if he has to get a minor surgery, let’s go get it right now so you’ll be ready for the run, because we’re going to make a run.”

Slusher was productive in the season opener against the Horned Frogs, logging six tackles before he left the game.

But the Buffaloes have other players who can step up to fill in the void. One of them is starter Trevor Woods.

Sanders raved about his knowledge and ability to lead the defense.

“Yeah, Trevor has been consistent, that’s why he’s starting,” the Colorado head coach said. “He’s been tremendously consistent at understanding the playbook, getting guys lined up and doing his job. And he did his job tremendously in that game.”

Woods recorded nine tackles in the season opener, as well as a forced fumble, an interception and a pass breakup.

He is a junior this season after playing extensively as a sophomore in 2022. Last season he logged 79 tackles, 1.0 tackles for a loss, an interception, two forced fumbles and four passes defended.

Colorado will return to action, albeit hampered by the Myles Slusher injury, this weekend with a home date against Nebraska.
