Billy Napier gave the latest on ailing QB DJ Lagway ahead of the Texas A&M game this week. The sophomore quarterback has dealt with myriad injuries during his short college career and was seen limping during the win over Texas.

Still, what was classified as a “lower body injury” won’t keep Lagway out this weekend. Nor will it keep him from practicing this week, per Napier.

So as Florida tries to keep some good vibes going, Napier said everything’s good with his star QB. As long as Lagway can play, things are looking up for Florida at the halfway point of the season.

“Yeah, he finished the game,” Napier said Monday. “He’s doing fine. Just some, you know things that we’ll work our way through this week, but in general, nothing that’s going to prevent him from practicing.”

Lagway finished the 29-21 win over Texas 21-of-28 passing for 298 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. In five games this year, Lagway has 988 yards, seven touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 68.9% completion percentage. For context, Lagway was picked off five times in a loss to LSU last month.

Napier raved about Lagway’s ability to overcome challenges and remain the team’s leader. At 2-3, it hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows for Florida, but they can turn things around in a hurry with a couple of more wins.

“He works like no one else,” Napier said. “For him, this experience is something I keep talking to him about. I tell him, ‘Look, you’re going to be playing this game for a long time, and there are going to be days like this, weeks like this.’ Playing in this league or the next one — every team is a good team. You’re going to have bad days, and you’ve got to have an identity independent of the game.

“That’s where his faith comes in. He can stand on that. Maybe someone else who doesn’t have that foundation would struggle, but he has it — and that’s what makes him really unique.”

Lagway and Napier know the criticism is out there and probably not going anywhere anytime soon. But Lagway is certainly standing by his head coach and teammates.

“We’re fighting for … each other,” Lagway said. “It’s us against the world, that’s kind of our mentality. And that’s kind of how we approach every single day and keep our heads down and continue to work.”

Florida and Lagway hit the road this weekend in a major SEC showdown. The Gators take on Texas A&M at 7:00 p.m. ET on Saturday.
