Steve Spurrier claims Florida's win over Texas 'could lead to a big year'

Florida got the win it desperately needed, taking down the Texas Longhorns. This broke a three-game losing streak for head coach Billy Napier, while adding the first SEC win of the season. Everyone’s mood in Gainesville has once again changed, including the legendary Steve Spurrier.
Even with a difficult schedule ahead, Spurrier believes the Texas win could lead to something special for Florida. A lot of positives came in his eyes, specifically on the offensive end. And with only one conference loss currently on the record, anything is possible.
“Good victory,” Spurrier said via Another Dooley Noted Podcast. “I’ll tell you what. It could lead to a big year. We’ve only got one SEC loss. Whoever wins it will probably only have one or two losses. We played the way we thought we were going to play all year. That’s what gives us hope and belief that maybe we can sustain this and keep playing that way. It was a good thing and I think Billy Napier called his best game.
“Our running back, Jadan Baugh, had 27 carries. Unbelievable… Dallas Wilson had at least eight or nine balls thrown at him, caught six, two touchdowns. Our defense played well, played very well throughout the game. Got some sacks there on Arch to put the game away. It was a good victory. Had a few miscues here and there.”
Spurrier highlighted the two difference makers for Florida on offense, Baugh and Wilson. The first of which entered the year projected to be one of college football’s top running backs. Baugh ran for 107 yards and a score on more touches than the previous two games combined.

As for Wilson, the former five-star and true freshman injected a new sense of life into the Florida pass game. Maybe DJ Lagway has a new favorite target, connecting six times for 111 yards and two touchdowns. Exactly what the Gators thought they were getting signing Wilson out of Tampa (FL) Tampa Bay Tech.
Hopefully, those trends can continue moving forward. But nothing will be easy moving forward. Florida heads on the road again this upcoming Saturday, going up against a red-hot Texas A&M team. Four other games vs. currently ranked teams still remain. Not to mention a trip to Lexington for a rivalry matchup.
The Texas victory was a great start in Spurrier’s eyes. Napier got his team to rally around him in 2024, seeking the same attitude a year later.
