Jaylen King explains his initial impression of Gus Malzahn in FSU offense

The Florida State Seminoles have completely revamped their offense going into the 2025 season. That means a new offensive coordinator in Gus Malzahn. It also means that the Seminoles brought in multiple transfer quarterbacks, including Thomas Castellanos and Jaylen King.
King recently met with the media. He shared what he’s seen from the new offense that Malzahn is installing. In particular, King emphasized just how much attention to detail is expected of the quarterbacks.
“Very, very detailed,” Jaylen King said. “He wants the ball placed in a specific type of way on different routes. Just a catch is not enough for him. Like, he wants a good head high ball where the guy can keep running, get yards after the catch.”
Jaylen King is going to be at his third college in as many seasons. He began by going to Gardner-Webb and then East Tennessee State, both of which are FCS programs. King would throw for 2,759 yards and 20 touchdowns, though he did have a turnover problem, throwing 19 interceptions during that time. On the ground, he was able to rush for 825 yards and another 10 touchdowns.
Gus Malzahn, meanwhile, left UCF where he was the head coach, orchestrating one of the best running attacks in the country during what had been a disappointing season overall. At FSU, he’ll be able to focus on the offense and playcalling, which he’s been known for throughout his career. He’d win a national championship at Auburn as a coordinator, and was known for his offensive attack even going back to high school. That offense has often proven to include good running quarterbacks.

King could fit the bill for a running quarterback in a Malzahn offense. However, his playing time is expected to be limited in 2025. Instead, he’s going to take a step back and develop for his future in the FSU offense.
“Definitely mentally trying to prepare,” Jaylen King said. “But I know as a competitor it’s hard to sit on the sideline. I started since I was a freshman. So, coming in and having to sit, it’s definitely hard. I’m just trying to prepare mentally. And just take the coaching and watch the guys like Tommy and just sit behind them and go over behind him like he’s going to take the snap like he’s doing.”
Ahead of Jaylen King, Florida State is expected to start Thomas Castellanos. If all goes well, he’ll stay healthy and excel in his own opportunity in the Malzahn offense.
