The 2025 season has some promise for the Florida State Seminoles. After going just 2-10 a year ago, head coach Mike Norvell flipped the roster and coaching staff, looking for a spark. Now, incoming quarterback Thomas Castellanos has full faith in the Seminoles’ offense he’s entering.

Castellanos represented Florida State at the 2025 ACC Football Kickoff. There, he was bullish about the offense, saying he believes they’ll be able to average 40 points per game next season.

“At its max potential, 40 points per game,” Thomas Castellanos said. “If we do what we need to do and execute and be one accord and play fast and how we need to, I think it could be 40 points a game at its best.”

In 2024, Mike Norvell brought in DJ Uiagalelei as a transfer quarterback. He struggled mightily in five games, though, only completing 53.8 percent of passes for 1,065 yards, four touchdowns, and six interceptions in five games. Behind him, the Seminoles had no answers either. For his part, Castellanos has a career 58.6 completion percentage with 3,689 passing yards in 26 games. He also has 33 touchdown passes and 19 interceptions for his career. A dual-threat quarterback, he also has 1,427 career rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns.

The result was one of the worst offenses in all of college football. The Seminoles were 132nd out of 134 teams in total offense, averaging 270.3 yards per game. They were also 131st in scoring offense, averaging just 15.4 points per game. Two teams in all of FBS football averaged 40 points per game last season. Five hit that mark in 2023, a season when Florida State averaged 34.6 points per game. So, even when the Seminoles put up an excellent offense, that’s a difficult bar to clear.

Florida State will have a new offensive coordinator in 2025. Gus Malzahn comes over from UCF, where he was the head coach. Interestingly, he and Thomas Castellanos have a prior relationship. He was the head coach of the Knights when Castellanos began his college career there. So, while it’s a new situation, it’s not an entirely new offense that he’s looking to fit into.

Throughout the offseason, Castellanos has been very confident publicly. That has included calling out Alabama and doubling down on that ahead of their Week 1 game. The Crimson Tide head to Tallahassee to open the season on August 30th.
