The first game of this weekend’s Athens Regional has been delayed due to severe weather that is expected in the area beginning around 1 pm ET, Georgia announced on X/Twitter.

The start of Friday’s first game between Binghamton and host No. 7 Georgia was delayed for “at least a couple of hours,” Georgia Baseball announced shortly before its scheduled start time of 12 noon ET. The game will resume with a 3:36 pm ET first pitch after rain swept through the Athens area over the previous hour, the host team announced just before 3 pm local time.

Scattered thunderstorms are expected to cross over the Athens area between 1-3 pm ET that is expected to drop as much as half-an-inch of rain, according to The Weather Channel. The Binghamton-Georgia game is expected to start once rain has cleared the area. The delay could also push back the start of Friday’s second game of the Athens Regional between Duke (37-19) and Oklahoma State (28-23), originally slated to begin at 6 pm ET, though it’s unclear how much it will impact the start time.

Seventh-ranked Georgia (42-15) enters postseason play after a one-and-done exit in last week’s SEC Baseball Tournament, and will host Binghamton (29-24), winner of the American East championship. The winner of the first game will play the winner between Duke and Oklahoma State on Saturday in the double-elimination regional.

The Bulldogs have struggled in recent weeks, including dropping two of three in a road series at Alabama, along with a 6-0 shutout in Game 2 of the Texas A&M series to end the regular season. With the 3-2 loss to Oklahoma in the second round of the 2025 SEC Baseball Tournament from Hoover, Ala., Georgia has lose four of its last six games entering the postseason. Prior to that, the Bulldogs won seven straight after ending a five-game losing streak, including a road sweep at Vanderbilt and a non-conference shutout loss at Clemson on April 22.

This report will be updated.
