Bill Self gets double technical, ejected vs. Texas Tech

Road games in the Big 12 can be incredibly frustrating, especially without one of your best players. That’s what Kansas was facing on Monday night in Lubbock, playing Texas Tech while Kevin McCullar still dealing with an injury. Kansas is already a team without a ton of depth and Texas Tech has certainly taken advantage.

At one point in the second half, Bill Self seemingly had enough after an offensive foul was called against Kansas away from the ball. He was given a technical for talking to the official but did not stop there. Eventually, the crew threw Self out of the game and he had to walk off the court — much to the pleasure of United Supermarkets Arena.

Self will have to watch the final five minutes and change from back in the locker room. He will be there waiting for his team at the final buzzer in what could be a depleted group heading back to Lawrence.

To no surprise, Kansas has been incredible at Allen Field House this season. They are a perfect 13-0 in front of the home crowd and have multiple signature wins. However, as with every team inside of the Big 12, winning on the road has felt nearly impossible at times.

Once the Texas Tech game goes final, all six of Kansas’ losses will be away from Lawrence. Four of them are true road games, with a nonconference loss to Marquette taking place at the Maui Invitational.

Frustrations finally boiled over for Self and instead of going for the usual technical to fire his team up, maybe one step further was made on purpose.

Kansas has six games remaining on the schedule, with the home and road games being split right down the middle. BYU, Kansas State, and Texas will all make the trip to one of college basketball’s best cathedrals in an attempt to end the Jayhawks’ home-winning streak.

Baylor, Houston, and Oklahoma will be the trio to host Kansas and will present quite the test moving forward. There are a lot of problems to fix but getting McCullar in the lineup should help.

But for now, all Kansas can focus on is getting out of Lubbock without doing any further damage to itself. It has just not been their night against Texas Tech and the final stretch will be done without the head coach.
