Kentucky point guard receives medical attention for in-practice injury

Kentucky point guard Sahvir Wheeler appeared to suffer an ankle injury and had to be helped off the floor at Monday’s practice, per KSR’s Jack Pilgrim. Wheeler, who transferred from Georgia this offseason, is set to play an integral role for the Wildcats in 2021-22.
He averaged 14 points and 7.4 assists per game for the Bulldogs in the 2020-21 season, both team highs. Kentucky TV reporter Maggie Davis said Wheeler used only his right leg as he was helped off the court. The injury appeared to be non-contact.
He kept his left shoe off as two members of the Wildcats basketball staff helped him to the locker room. Kentucky held its Pro Day on Sunday evening and the annual Big Blue Madness game is set for Friday at 8 p.m. ET.
A consensus top 100 recruit in the 2019 class, Wheeler committed to Georgia over offers from Texas A&M and Iowa State. He helped the Bulldogs to a 14-12 campaign this past season under coach Tom Crean.
Kentucky is coming off of the worst record since the 1926-27 season. They finished 9-16 this past year and missed the postseason entirely. Wheeler isn’t the only transfer addition to the Wildcats basketball team.

Iowa guard CJ Fredrick, Davidson guard Kellan Grady and West Virginia forward Oscar Tshiebwe all also join Kentucky in 2021-22. Grady averaged more than 17 points per game in his career at Davidson, and should provide instant scoring.
The Wildcats also have true freshman point guard TyTy Washington, the No. 16 overall player in On3’s class of 2021 rankings. He could be a candidate to start should Wheeler have to be held out to start the year.
More updates on the injury of the Kentucky point guard are likely to come within the next few days. The Wildcats will hope Wheeler can make his return to the floor in time for their season opener against Duke on Nov. 9.
