Louisville is a perfect 4-0 through the first five weeks of the 2025 regular season, including Saturday’s 34-27 win at Pitt in the ACC opener for both programs. Still, Jeff Brohm‘s unbeaten Cardinals (4-0, 1-0 ACC) find themselves on the outside looking in on the AP Top 25.

Louisville received 36 votes in the latest AP poll released Monday, effectively ranking it 30th behind the likes of fellow unranked South Florida, Utah, Mississippi State and Memphis. This comes as the Cardinals prepare to take on No. 24 Virginia, which broke into the Top 25 this week after last Friday night’s upset of then-No. 8 Florida State, at 3:30 pm ET on Saturday at L&N Frederal Credit Union Stadium in Louisville.

Brohm weighed in on the Cards’ perceived lack of national respect during Monday’s press conference.

“I haven’t looked at it a whole lot. Of course, who you play and their record — all that — how you finished the year before all factors into it,” Brohm said Monday. “It is what it is. I think in the end, for us, we’ll be judged on how we do at the end of the season. And there will be some judgement passed in between then, which is normal, and common and OK. But you have to play to the end, and not just in a game but the end of the season. And you’ve got to be able to handle wins and losses.

“You look at the national championship team last year (Ohio State) had two losses (before the Playoffs),” Brohm continued. “So yes, you don’t want to lose, and you’ve got to work hard not to have it happen. But if it does, you’ve got to be able to circle the wagons and improve and dig down deep and find a way to win the next one.”

That next one is against the upstart Cavaliers (4-1, 2-1 ACC), who have won three straight since a 35-31 road loss at NC State in the ACC opener for both programs. Of course, while a ranked win Saturday could go a long way to earning more love from AP voters, it won’t mean much if the Cardinals can’t keep things rolling in two weeks when Louisville travels to Coral Gables to play No. 3 Miami on Oct. 17.

“Right now we’ve got a really good opponent that’s hot, is coming into our stadium, they’ve already played us extremely tight the last two years and had a lead on us in the fourth quarter both times,” Brohm added. “They know how to play football and they know how to coach, and right now they’re playing very confident, and we’ve got to be as efficient as we can, come into this week swinging and see if we can pull it out at the end of four quarters.”
