Brian Kelly reveals offensive play-calling plan for LSU

Brian Kelly revealed his plans on offense this season for LSU, including how he’ll handle play-calling duties. After starting his answer by proving while he’ll never be a comedian, Kelly stated his reasonings for delegating the responsibility.
“Let’s get this clear, I call all the really good plays,” joked Kelly. “Delegating those responsibilities was not very difficult for me, because for my time, it was so important that I spent more time with the players on a day-to-day basis.
“So, if you’re in meeting rooms and you’re tied up most of the day, with the other things and the collateral responsibilities, it’s very difficult to build the kind of relationships you want with your team. It allows me to be in the training room, it allows me to be at meal, it allows me to do other things and build those relationships with our players.
“Now look, I’m still responsible for the football. The head coach is responsible. This is not a detachment from anything. I’ll meet with our coordinators. Be in offensive meetings and defensive meetings. But, there’s a difference between full detachment. And still as the head coach be responsible for end of game situations, timeouts, appropriateness relative to fixing things as they go. I’ll still be involved in those things.“
Evidently, Brian Kelly would rather have his hands in all facets of the team. He doesn’t want to be dragged down by the offensive play-calling duties. Nevertheless, he’ll make his preferences known to his offensive staff.

In response to being asked about the general impressions Kelly has of his team, the LSU coach simply stated the Tigers aren’t ready.
“We’re not ready to play,” stated Kelly. “If we have to play tomorrow, we’re not ready yet. But we will be ready. It’s going to be a process for us. I like the facts. Like many teams that I’ve had in the past, at this time, this is the fifth time I’ve done this — there’s a want to. They recognize, and they are aware of what they’ve done the last two years. Cumulatively, it’s been .500. And that’s not good enough. So there is a desire to want to change that. And so, there is that want to.
“Now, we’ve got a lot of things that we’ve got to work on to be the championship program that we want to be. But I guess like everything else, as long as we have a group of players that are committed to do what we want to do here, we’re pretty confident that we can get them there come opening day.”
Brian Kelly is no stranger to having to build a program out of dark times. Evidently, he believes he’ll have no problem doing so once again at LSU.
