LSU Tigers quarterback Garrett Nussmeier (18) yells down field Saturday, Aug. 30, 2025 during the NCAA football game against the Clemson Tigers at Memorial Stadium in Clemson, South Carolina.

As rumors continue to swirl regarding the health of LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, they were addressed on Wednesday by head coach Brian Kelly. He called out the “misinformation” out there on Nussmeier following the Tigers’ loss in Oxford against Ole Miss. Kelly reiterated the abdominal injury is on the “backside” and Nussmeier is on track to become his normal self again.

“That’s misinformation,” Kelly said via the SEC Coaches Teleconference. “Those are not based on any facts. They’re quite silly, actually… This is misinformation. Early on, he had an ab strain, not a core injury, in terms of what a core injury that we deal with. And it’s been slow to heal. But as I mentioned, he’s on the backside of that. He’s getting rest this week and he’ll be the Garrett Nussmeier he needs to be as we get into the difficult part of our schedule.”

LSU’s offense, as a whole, struggled this past Saturday. Nothing in the run game got going, meaning Nussmeier dropped back to pass in obvious situations a ton. It resulted in a 21-for-34 performance, going for 197 yards, one touchdown, and an interception. However, Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin would tell you the score was a “fluke” too after Nic Anderson got under a ball tipped up in the end zone.

Kelly was the one to reveal Nussmeier dealt with an injury in the early portion of the season. Training camp is where the ab problem is rooted. But from the Southeastern Louisiana game on, Kelly has insisted his quarterback is doing well health-wise.

Thankfully, there is some opportunity to rest, as Kelly mentioned. LSU observes a bye week on Saturday, letting Nussmeier heal whatever might still be bothering him. Fans in Baton Rouge will watch games across the country and might hope their quarterback joins them.

From there, SEC play continues in a big way for the Tigers. South Carolina comes to Death Valley after last year’s exciting matchup. From there, LSU faces three consecutive teams currently ranked in the AP poll top 25, two of which are on the road.

Nussmeier’s play will continue to be a big-time storyline moving forward, whether the team wins or loses. Expectations were high for the unit entering a season, largely due to the experience Nussmeier brought back. Kelly insists his quarterback is healthy and wanted to make sure any other opinion on the matter got squashed.
