Garrett Nussmeier injury update: Frank Wilson reveals latest on LSU QB's status vs. Oklahoma
On Sunday, LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier was reported to be eventually sidelined again for the Tigers’ season finale this weekend at Oklahoma. However, Frank Wilson was not as definitive on that based on their plans as far as recovery this week for their prior starter.
Wilson addressed Nussmeier’s status for Saturday’s game against the Sooners in the first answer at his press conference on Monday. He said the program will take note of how he does this week, starting with practice tomorrow, to determine if he can return to the field for LSU.
“We’re going to try to see what he looks like today, or tomorrow should I say in practice,” said Wilson. “He was good in treatment this weekend.”
Nussmeier has not played since he was benched in the second half of their road loss to No. 4 Alabama back on November 8th. A reaggravation of an abdominal injury, which has bothered him at points for the duration of this season, in the days leading up to their next game then sidelined him against Arkansas, and did so again this past weekend against Western Kentucky on Senior Night in Death Valley.
With only one game left in the regular season, as well as a bowl game to eventually play, there is a wonder now if this fall, and, with it, his collegiate career, could be over for Nussmeier, especially with preparations to be made for him, namely getting healthy at this point, as far as the 2026 NFL Draft. That wasn’t the suggestion based on what was said today by Wilson, but it was at least noted again by Matthew Brune at The Bengal Tiger.

“(Wilson) did not comment on the status of Garrett Nussmeier, but it seems from the outside as though his season is done as he continues to heal from the upper body injury,” Brune wrote this afternoon.
If Nussmeier is unable to go, QB Michael Van Buren could be in play for another start for LSU against OU. That’s after posting 63.6% completion for 211.5 yards per game with two touchdowns and one interception, while also rushing for 24 yards per game, as the starter in his place for those pair of wins against the Razorbacks and Hilltoppers.
Today was too soon for Wilson to determine anything yet as far as Nussmeier. Now, we’ll have to wait to know more about his status until later in the week, whether it be when his coach comments on it again or when his designation is updated as part of the SEC Availability Report.
“Real early on this Monday to project,” said Wilson. “But, we’ll give him a go at it, and see how he feels, and probably, midweek, be able to give you better answers to that when I come in here on Thursday, or Wednesday.”
