Garrett Nussmeier injury update: LSU QB's status revealed after being helped off practice field

LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier is “fine” after being helped off the practice field Wednesday, The Bengal Tiger’s Shea Dixon reported on The Ponderosa message board. Nussmeier left due to an apparent injury during a closed practice.
Concern began to grow around Nussmeier after news of his departure from practice made its way across social media. However, Dixon reported there’s no need to hit a “panic button” and the expectation is the redshirt senior quarterback will be alright.
Nussmeier is preparing for his second season as LSU’s starting quarterback after opting not to declare for the 2025 NFL Draft. He put together a huge first year as the Tigers’ QB1, throwing for 4,052 yards and 29 touchdowns in 2024.
Nussmeier took a redshirt as a freshman in 2021 before sitting behind Jayden Daniels for two years from 2022-23. The transfer portal loomed as an option for him, but Nussmeier ultimately chose to stay and await his turn as the starter.
Daniels is part of an impressive group of Year 2 starters at LSU to take leaps forward, along with Joe Burrow. Nussmeier will look to follow in those footsteps and is already generating Heisman Trophy buzz. In fact, ESPN’s Louis Riddick predicted him to win the prestigious award Wednesday during an appearance on Get Up.

“I’m going to go with Garrett Nussmeier,” Riddick said. “He’s going to be the one who’s in control. He’s the one who has the ball in his hands every single play. He’s uber-talented. He’s super smooth, makes great decisions, really poised in the pocket and he’s in control of his own destiny. I kind of like that. I kind of like what he brings to the table.
“I’ve seen Cade Klubnik play, I don’t think he’s going to be a Heisman Trophy favorite. I get to see LaNorris Sellers early in the season. Garrett Nussmeier is the pick for me, though, right now.”
When it comes to comparisons to either Burrow or Daniels, though, Nussmeier is keeping things in perspective. He wants to write his own legacy while also hoping to achieve the ultimate goal of winning a title.
“I’m Garrett Nussmeier,” Nussmeier told reporters last month at the Manning Passing Academy in Thibodaux, La. “I’m not Jayden Daniels, I’m not Joe Burrow – I’m Garrett Nussmeier. So I’m going to be the best Garrett Nussmeier I can be and hopefully, it’s enough for the LSU Tigers.”
