Former coach Herm Edwards gave Brian Kelly some advice after the LSU coach seemed to imitate Edwards’ iconic postgame rant. “You play to win the game,” you all remember that right?

But what made Edwards’ rant stick out? He said “hello.” You know, he tried to get you and the media’s attention.

Well, that’s what Kelly did not do after LSU beat Florida 20-10 on Saturday night. So here’s some advice for the Tigers’ coach from Edwards himself.

“Well, look, Coach Kelly, I love him,” Edwards said on SportsCenter. “He’s trying to imitate a little bit of how I went off in New York, but he forgot the jingle. That’s the most important thing. And the jingle is this, ‘hello.’ Gotta say ‘hello.’ That gets everyone’s attention when you say ‘hello.’ So Coach, next time you go off, just make sure you say ‘hello’ first.”

Edwards’ iconic comments came during a midweek press conference in October of the 2002 season when he was still the head coach of the New York Jets. At the time, New York was 2-5 fresh off a loss to the Cleveland Browns. But Edwards’ masterful soundbyte came at the right time as the Jets rallied to go 7-2 down the stretch, win the AFC East and actually win a playoff game!

“This is what’s great about sports,” Edwards said. “This is what the greatest thing about sports is, you play to win the game. Hello, you play to win the game. You don’t play to just play it. That’s the great thing about sports. You play to win, and I don’t care if you don’t have any wins, you go play to win. When you start telling me it doesn’t matter, then retire, get out, cause it matters.”

After an opening statement, a question was asked about the Tigers’ offensive performance against Florida, which is where Kelly comes in. It’s a third game in a row where the unit struggled after entering the season with incredibly high expectations. Kelly did not take too kindly to the question.

“Stop, really? Is that the first question?” Kelly asked. “We won the game 20-10. Try another question. What do you want me to tell you? I just laid it out for you. We played the game to win the game. We played the game to win the game.”

Maybe needs a little work huh? Kelly’s quote will be remembered though!
