As the sweet sounds of Callin’ Baton Rouge rang out over Alex Box Stadium following LSU‘s 12-5 win over West Virginia to claim the Baton Rouge Super Regional, coach Jay Johnson readied his speech. He gathered the team around.

The LSU skipper had plenty to say, most of which was about encouraging his guys to take the next step. The Tigers are going back to Omaha for the first time since they won a national title there in 2023.

“I want you to enjoy the hell out of this,” Johnson said, in a video recorded by WAFB-TV’s John Eads. “This didn’t happen by accident, OK? This is the f****** definition of tough and together and team over me. And I just want you to know when we get a quiet second, I’m so f****** proud of you. I wouldn’t trade one of you for anybody. Not one guy.”

LSU swept through the Baton Rouge Super Regional with relative ease following a much tougher go of it in the Baton Rouge Regional a week prior. An offensive explosion netted 28 runs for the Tigers in the series against the Mountaineers.

It took only two games, then it was over. And now LSU is one of the last eight teams standing.

“There’s guys that didn’t give us the time of day and they’re sitting their ass home this weekend,” Johnson said. “But you guys f****** did it. It’s one thing to know you have a great team. It’s another thing to go out there and do it like you did on this f****** field. You won like 35 of 40 home games on this field. That’s sick.”

But there’s a next step for LSU, too. A trip to Omaha is just the beginning if all goes well. And few know what winning in Omaha is like better than the Tigers.

After all, they’re just two years removed from a national championship. Some of the players on this year’s team have that experience already under their belt.

So Johnson furnished the Tigers with the last part of his message. It was about refocusing.

“OK, now, clear delineation, OK?” he said. “Be smart, have fun with this tonight, OK? Tomorrow we’ll meet at 4 o’clock and we’ll get ready to win a f****** national championship.”
