LSU wasted no time making a play for one of the country’s best safeties in its own backyard.

On Saturday, the Tigers secured a commitment from On300 defensive back Dashawn McBryde, the No. 18-rated safety in the country according to the On3 Industry Ranking. McBryde pledged to LSU over the likes of Tennessee, Mississippi State and Texas Tech, among others.

The Tigers have been trending with the four-star safety, who collected nine interceptions as a junior for Denham Springs (La.) High School last fall. After extending an offer and hosting McBryde almost a half-dozen times this spring, LSU finally won out for his commitment.

“Having LSU look at me since the fall really ingrained in my mind that they wanted me and my relationships with the coaching staff are amazing,” McBryde told On3 on his decision to commit. “The visits to LSU really brought to life what all the hype was about. The many legends leaving and still returning to LSU are just amazing to see because you can really see how much LSU has done for them and how much they love it there.”

“You know playing for LSU is just a blessing for my family,” the safety continued. “We only live about 30 minutes from Tiger Stadium, so it won’t be much of an effort for them to get them down to watch me on Saturdays. That played a big role in my decision because I know come from a big LSU family.”

Spring football sparked McBryde’s commitment

McBryde never had a timeline for a college decision, but the thought stuck with the On300 defender throughout the spring.

By the time the LSU spring game arrived on Saturday, the 6-foot-3, 205-pound safety felt very comfortable about his decision and even more so about the timing.

“It was kind of difficult for me to choose a school because I really wanted to go to a place they really wanted me as a player and as a student,” McBryde started. “All of the schools I’ve been talking to had that in common, but something with LSU just really hit me. When I was watching the practices, it was really intense and just overall a great experience to watch. It’s definitely something I look forward to doing there.”

“By committing now, it was just for me to get on board with college-level experience,” he continued. “I really want to start early and get to know how and what goes on in the meetings. I love the coaches there. They look like they love their jobs and love working for LSU.”

McBryde was a Louisiana All-State selection after piling up 46 tackles, including 4 TFL and nine interceptions from his safety spot as a junior — a school record at Denham Springs. He had three touchdowns on the season, including two on defense. He added another 9 pass breakups and 4 forced fumbles.

McBryde checks in as the No. 210 overall player in the country, per the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
