The LSU baseball team is off and running at the SEC Tournament, knocking off South Carolina 10-3 behind another strong outing from potential No. 1 MLB Draft pick Dylan Crews.

And with LSU a lock for the postseason and all but certain to bring baseball back to Alex Box over the next couple weeks, Crews is reflecting on a journey that has provided everything he hoped it would when he turned down the opportunity to be selected in the 2020 MLB Draft.

“Oh my gosh, I mean I can’t even put words to it, honestly,” Crews told an SEC Network broadcast crew after his SEC Tournament opener. “This is the best time of my life right now. I’m enjoying every second of it. I love wearing purple and gold every day, it’s awesome.”

The talented LSU star said he’d make the same choice he made over and over again and would recommend it to any high schoolers weighing their choice.

“One hundred percent, 100%,” Dylan Crews said. “It gets you ready for the next level. Like I said, it was the best decision I ever made and I definitely don’t think it’s something you should skip out on.”

One of the things that drew Crews to LSU was the atmosphere the program always has. Baseball is everything in the spring in Baton Rouge, where LSU has won six national championships.

The tailgating scene, the attendance figures, the cuisine.

All of it comes together to make LSU a special place, and Crews has gotten to experience some of that with his family in down times before or after games this season.

“Sometimes on the home games I do, I go over there and hang out with them,” Crews said. “The atmosphere they have over there is unbelievable, so I try and go and hang out with all of them.”

Suffice it to say he gets healthy servings of whatever Cajun dish is being served up.

“Oh yeah, I’m not going hungry, that’s for sure,” Dylan Crews said.

On Wednesday at the SEC Tournament it was the South Carolina pitching staff that was serving up some meatballs for Crews and the gang. The Tigers gashed the Gamecocks with 10 runs on 12 hits, frequently knocking the ball around the yard.

Crews had two hits, both singles, against South Carolina. He drove in one run and scored twice himself. He also drew a walk in the contest.

The Tigers blew open the game with a four-run bottom of the fifth inning, an inning in which Crews loaded the bases with his first hit of the game. It was smooth sailing from there.

“I think this team, I think we’re going right after guys in the postseason,” Dylan Crews said. “Not waiting around, just going right after teams. Great job today by the guys.”

With the win, LSU will advance to the third round of SEC Tournament action on Thursday. The tournament is currently in the double-elimination format and will be until the semifinals on Saturday.
