LSU Tigers wide receiver Shelton Sampson Jr. plans to enter the Transfer Portal, according to On3’s Hayes Fawcett.

Shelton Sampson Jr. came to LSU as a four-star recruit in the Class of 2023, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. He played his high school football at Catholic in Baton Rouge, LA. There, he was the 14th-ranked wide receiver and the 80th-ranked recruit overall in the country.

In 2023, Sampson took a redshirt, playing in three games but not starting any of those games. He did not record any stats in those appearances either. He would go on to play in eight games, earning a start in 2024. However, he still did not earn a stat at the wide receiver position for LSU.

This comes following a disappointing season for the LSU Tigers, going 8-4 overall and 5-3 in the SEC. It was a good season but not one to keep the Tigers in the conversation for either the SEC Championship or the College Football Playoff.

Over the years, LSU has been known for its excellent wide receivers. 2024 is no exception in that regard. Several Tigers stood out in the team’s pass-heavy offense. The most notable of those was, likely, Kyren Lacy, who had 58 receptions for 866 yards and nine touchdowns during the regular season. Aaron Anderson and CJ Daniels were also key offensive weapons for the Tigers. Meanwhile, tight end Mason Taylor was third on the team in receiving with 55 receptions for 546 yards and two touchdowns.

He will have three seasons of eligibility remaining. He will bring with him plenty of upside that a new situation will hopefully help him to reach.

Next season, the LSU Tigers are going to need to manage a good deal of turnover on their offense. Some of the most notable of that turnover is going to be along the offensive line. Kyren Lacy at wide receiver is also out of eligibility. So, someone is going to need to step into that role for the Tigers.
