On Sunday, LSU baseball defeated Coastal Carolina 5-3 in Game 2 of the College World Series to win the national championship. It’s the program’s second national title in the last three years. On Thursday, LSU athletic director Scott Woodward reflected on the championship and the school’s recent athletic success.

“As I watched our baseball team’s incredible run to the program’s eighth national championship in Omaha, I couldn’t help but reflect and be grateful for all of you,” Woodward wrote. “All of our student-athletes, coaches and staff. All of our passionate and generous LSU fans and donors. Our incredible partners who believe in what we’re doing. Our state government leaders who encourage our institutional and athletics success. And all Louisianans who take pride in the state’s flagship university.

“Sunday’s national title is the 53rd in LSU’s history, including the sixth since 2019. That athletic achievement has coincided with record-setting success in the classroom and the community. It’s all occurred through a challenging and transformative time in college sports. But as Louisianans always do, we’ve answered the call and met the moment.

“Each and every one of you are what makes this state and university great. You are what makes the LSU brand a powerful symbol of excellence and forward-thinking. The 2025 baseball team’s motto perfectly
embodies the LSU spirit: “Tough & Together.” Together, there’s nothing we can’t accomplish.”

Woodward has been the athletic director at LSU since 2019. In his time at the school, Woodward has hired women’s basketball head coach Kim Mulkey, baseball head coach Jay Johnson and football head coach Brian Kelly.

Mulkey and Johnson have each won national championships since being hired at LSU, and Kelly hasn’t led LSU to any season with fewer than nine wins. Moreover, Woodward has led LSU through the troubles that came with the introduction of NIL and the transfer portal.

Now, with the House v. NCAA settlement, the college sports landscape is changing again. Alas, Woodward is confident that LSU is in an excellent position moving into the future.

It’s difficult to blame him. LSU is riding a surplus of momentum into the upcoming year. The school finished in 17th place in the Learfield Directors’ Cup, which is annually given to the college in the United States with the most success in collegiate athletics.

Woodward will look to only build on that success as he helps usher in the era of revenue sharing at LSU. There will undoubtedly be plenty of challenges ahead, but with LSU fans supporting him each step of the way, Woodward likes the school’s chances of succeeding.
