Whenever teams go away on long road trips, hijinks and antics are likely to ensue. That was the case with LSU on its road to the Men’s College World Series title this year.

Some of the national champions made a recent appearance at a Raisin’ Canes restaurant, where the group of players was asked about the funniest moment of their time in Omaha. Tre’ Morgan decided to spill the beans on Thatcher Hurd‘s moment before the team’s winner-take-all semifinal versus Wake Forest.

One of the most hyped games in recent Men’s College World Series, the game featured two of this upcoming draft’s top-10 prospects in Tigers flamethrower Paul Skenes and Demon Deacons ace Rhett Loweder facing off on the mound.

“Probably one of the most important games of the season, we’re all getting ready to play,” Morgan said. “We’re getting ready to face Rhett Lowder, who’s one of the best pitchers in the country. And Thatcher gets his little pregame meal and it says on DoorDash that his order’s downstairs. So he goes downstairs and there’s a guy with his little brown bag. Thatcher walks up to him and says, is this DoorDash for me? He goes, yes this is for Rhett L. Thatcher takes the DoorDash and eats it in our meeting. Rhett Lowder didn’t get his pregame meal.”

As the five players at the Raisin’ Canes event laugh at the hilarity of the story, Tigers head coach Jay Johnson interjected to make one thing clear.

“Let me clarify, that’s the only run we scored off him,” Johnson said.

Lowder, the 2023 ACC Pitcher of the Year and first-time All-American, entered the game with a 15-0 record in 18 starts. Wake Forest had won all 18 of those games.

He had a brilliant performance against LSU, throwing seven shutout innings while allowing just three hits and two walks.

Unluckily for him — even more unluckily than his pregame meal being stolen — was that Lowder’s incredible start was neutralized by Skenes, the SEC Pitcher of the Year. Skenes threw eight innings with just two hits and eight runs allowed. The 6-foot-6 right-hander struck out nine batters.

The game went to extra innings, where Tommy White hit a two-run homer in the top of the 11th. Hurd, who had entered the game in the ninth inning to replace Skenes, closed out the LSU victory in the bottom of the inning.

He earned the win for the game.
