The LSU football team is dealing with some injuries heading into its bye week, fresh off a heartbreaking loss to Ole Miss. The Tigers will hope to get a few of the currently injured players back ahead of a contest against South Carolina.

Offensive tackle Weston Davis was injured just prior to the game against the Rebels. Coach Brian Kelly explained.

“Weston got hurt in pregame,” the LSU boss said. “Caught a helmet, fractured his nose in pregame and was concussed, so he had a head injury as well. He’s moving forward. He’s doing well. My expectation is that he can clear the protocol, but that’s one thing I never like to get into with the protocol in terms of who can and can’t. But he’s moving in the right direction from that.”

He wasn’t the only player to suffer an injury recently. Fellow offensive lineman Paul Mubenga was also hurt recently.

“Paul’s got a high-ankle sprain,” Kelly said. “So some respond better than others. He’s an offensive lineman. … Going to play it day by day.”

Garrett Nussmeier nursing ab issue for LSU

Perhaps the most important injury news for LSU is the status of quarterback Garrett Nussmeier. Nussmeier has reportedly been dealing with an ab strain for the last few weeks.

But the injury shouldn’t be causing the level of consternation in the fanbase as it is, Kelly said. He’s been flooded with questions about Nussmeier’s health in the last week or two, following some subpar performances.

One reporter asked Kelly on Wednesday on an SEC teleconference call whether Nussmeier might require surgery. He doesn’t.

“That’s misinformation,” Kelly said. “Those are not based on any facts. They’re quite silly, actually… This is misinformation. Early on, he had an ab strain, not a core injury, in terms of what a core injury that we deal with. And it’s been slow to heal. But as I mentioned, he’s on the backside of that. He’s getting rest this week and he’ll be the Garrett Nussmeier he needs to be as we get into the difficult part of our schedule.”

LSU will certainly be hoping the added time to rest this week gives both offensive linemen and Nussmeier the chance to fully heal. The Tigers could use all three going forward.
