Carson Beck did his best to stay composed following a massive season opening win over Notre Dame in his Miami debut, but the emotions came flowing out. It had been a difficult offseason for the quarterback after transferring from Georgia, but in the end he pushed through and his preparation showed in a 27-24 victory.

The Hurricanes pulled off the victory at the last second when Beck drove them downfield for the go-ahead field goal with one minute remaining. The quarterback joined ESPN’s Molly McGrath for a postgame interview, and he couldn’t hold it in any longer.

“Oh man, sh*t,” Beck said as tears began to well up in his eyes. “The past eight months has been so hard. I’m just so blessed to be out here to have an opportunity to play again. I love these guys. I’m so proud of the way we played. We played so hard. In the face of adversity, we got it done when we needed to. I’m just so blessed and so thankful to have ths opportunity to play the game I love.”

Beck finished 20-of-30 passing for 205 yards and two touchdowns in his Miami debut. He helped the Hurricanes jump out to a 21-7 lead before holding off a late rallying from Notre Dame, which came back to tie things up in the fourth quarter.

Carson Beck had plenty of doubters who didn’t believe he was worth the money that Miami paid him this offseason. Even in spite of his efficient numbers in the SEC the past two seasons, some questioned his ability to help Miami compete for a national title.

The Hurricanes are still clearly a long way from that goal, but a victory against the No. 6 Fighting Irish shows the rest of the country they are for real. And for Beck, he feels right at home with his new teammates, citing how they have helped him learn to love football again after a rough offseason.

“Everyone just loves to compete,” he said. “It’s a real family and a real brotherhood. Oh my gosh, I’m sorry. So many emotions. I’m so thankful for the guys I have around me. I’m so thankful for the way that they worked day in and day out. Early mornings, late nights, it doesn’t matter.”

Beck will hope to carry this performance with him throughout the remainder of the season as Miami aims for an ACC Championship and College Football Playoff berth. Up next for the Hurricanes is a battle with Bethune-Cookman in Week 2.
