Danny Kanell fiercely defends Miami, Cam Ward over strength of schedule criticisms

Miami ripped off a ninth straight win on Saturday, staying unbeaten on the season with a beatdown of Duke in a 53-31 shootout. Still, there are questions about the schedule strength for the ‘Canes.
Many have openly wondered if the ‘Canes can afford a loss or two while remaining in College Football Playoff contention.
Of course, until Miami actually loses a game, none of that really matters.
But at least one college football analyst is sticking up for Mario Cristobal and the Hurricanes, against what many perceive to be one of the weaker schedules in the country for a power conference team.
“They’d be ranked #1 or #2 and Cam Ward would be an even bigger favorite for the Heisman,” wrote Danny Kanell, quote-tweeting a post that said “imagine if Miami played a tough schedule.”
The Hurricanes have had some close calls on the schedule this season already.
The team survived a thrilling 38-34 contest against Virginia Tech, with the final play of regulation a heave into the end zone that was initially ruled a touchdown catch for the Hokies, only to be overturned on replay, giving Miami the win.

Miami also had to withstand a close contest against California, putting together an improbable come-from-behind win on the road. The following week was another close one, a 52-45 result against Louisville.
But the bottom line is that Miami remains undefeated, at 9-0. Quarterback Cam Ward has been a huge part of that, racking up impressive numbers that have him in Heisman Trophy contention.
And until the Hurricanes actually drop a game, there really isn’t even any point in talking about the schedule strength. It won’t matter if Miami keeps winning.
Still, at least Kanell is sticking up for the ACC in this case.
