The Miami Hurricanes made a major splash this offseason, bringing in quarterback Carson Beck as a transfer. He’ll now be tasked with replacing Cam Ward at quarterback, a task that he’ll have to do while coming off an injury and trying to win over the locker room.

Since getting to Miami, Beck has come up in conversations regarding both his rehab and off-field rumors. That included getting publicly bashed by his now-ex-girlfriend  Hanna Cavinder and reports of locker room issues following him. That’s something that Rece Davis recently addressed on the College GameDay Podcast, though he largely dismissed it as off-season talk.

“I know what Mario [Cristobal] said was he’s ready to start throwing,” Davis said. “That’s going to be a big thing. That’s another thing, talking about some of this stuff in addition to getting Jackson Cantwell, the offensive lineman and recruit, and they’re also doing a good job in the portal, and the stuff came out, how everything’s magnified with Carson Beck. Nobody likes him. Georgia teammates didn’t like him. Miami teammates didn’t like him. Then, all of a sudden, this clip comes out of these guys having the time of their lives out there and Carson Beck cheering on everybody. So, what did the Head Ball Coach, Steve Spurrier [say]? It’s talking season.”

It can be difficult to win over a new locker room coming in as a transfer. Beck hasn’t had much opportunity to do that on the field yet, either. He was largely sidelined throughout the spring as he’s been rehabbing from the injury he suffered in the SEC Championship Game last season.

It was a UCL injury that would require surgery, but he’s recently seen some good progress. Head coach Mario Cristobal shared in May that “he’s good to go.” Davis went on to echo that sentiment.

“I think he’s gonna be cleared,” Davis said. “If he’s not gonna be cleared, he’s gonna be cleared pretty soon, is my understanding.”

Last season at Georgia, Beck completed 64.7% of his passes for 3,485 yards and 28 touchdowns to 12 interceptions. It was considered a disappointment after he came into the season with some massive expectations. Still, it was good enough to help win the SEC and go to the College Football Playoff.

Beck has received further attention for the reported $4 million NIL deal he received to go to Miami. That’s had plenty of doubters call him out, seemingly including Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin.

“Miami gave him $4.3 million?” Kiffin said. “Did they watch his game against us?”

With his price tag and pedigree, there are going to be massive expectations on Carson Beck’s shoulders in 2025. He’ll also be tested immediately as Miami opens the season by hosting Notre Dame. A bit ironically, it’s the same team that eliminated Georgia last season while he was sidelined with the UCL injury.
