Jase Richardson injury update: Troubling news emerges on Michigan State guard status vs. UNC

Michigan State true freshman point guard Jase Richardson is out for Wednesday night’s matchup against North Carolina in the Maui Invitational, according to Matt Norlander.
Richardson took an elbow to the head during the Spartans’ previous game against Memphis. According to the ESPN2 broadcast, Richardson developed symptoms and was evaluated Tuesday night and before the game on Wednesday before being ruled out. He is averaging 10.4 points for Michigan State this season.
During the 71-63 loss to Memphis on Tuesday, Richardson played 25 minutes for the Spartans and shot 5 of 8 from the field as well as 3 of 5 from the 3-point line. He finished with 18 points, three rebounds and two assists before ending his night. It was a career-high for the young guard.
The loss is a tough one for the Spartans during arguably the Spartans’ toughest test to date in Maui against the Tar Heels.
Prior to arriving on campus, Richardson was a four-star recruit in the 2024 recruiting class and the No. 34 best recruit in his cycle, according to On3s Industry Rankings, a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services.

The 6-foot-3 combo guard committed to Tom Izzo and company in mid-October 2023, choosing the Spartans over Alabama, Arkansas, USC, and Kansas. Richardson ranked as the No. 5 overall point guard in his class and was the eighth best basketball recruit from the state of Florida.
Luckily for Richardson, he will be able to enjoy an extended rest as the Spartans don’t have another game until Dec. 4 when they match up against Big Ten Conference opponent Minnesota on the road.
After playing three games in three days in Maui, Michigan State will play just five games during the month of December before the bulk of conference action begins in January. Richardson’s status for those matchups in the coming weeks remains to be seen as he recovers from the elbow he suffered against the Tigers.
